I. Objectives
Quarter:  First/ week 4
Content:  The Normal Distribution
Competencies:  Illustrates a normal random variable and its characteristics
 Identifies regions under the normal curve corresponding to different
standard normal values.
 Converts a normal random variable to a standard normal variable
and vice versa
 Compute probabilities and percentile using the standard normal
table

II. Discussion Z-Scores

Terminologies
The Normal Distribution  Population is a group of phenomena that have something in
 Concept and Properties of Normal Distribution common.
 Areas Under the Normal Curve  Sample is a smaller group of members of a population
 Understanding the Standard Score (z – score) selected to represent the population.
 Application of Normal Distribution  Parameter is a characteristic of a population
The normal distribution is a probability function that  Statistics is a characteristics of a sample
describes how the values of a variables are
distributed. Sample Statistics Population
The normal distribution is an example of a Parameter

continuous distribution. It also pertains to a family of
Standard s σ
bell-shaped curves that model a number of

continuous variables.

Standard Normal Distribution
Z-score reveals how many units of the standard
deviation the raw score is above or below the mean. It allows
us to compare the results to different normal distribution.
What is the importance of the z-scores? Raw scores
may be composed of large value, but large values cannot be
accommodated at the base line of the normal curve. It
transformed the scores for convenience without sacrificing
meaning associated with the raw scores.

Properties of the Standard Normal Distribution X −X

z= (Z – Scores for sample data)
1) The curve has a single peak. (unimodal) s
2) Mean is equal to median is equal to mode. Where: X given measurement
3) The shape of the curve will depend on the mean and µ Population mean
the standard deviation. σ Population standard deviation
4) The distribution has a mean of 0 and a standard X Sample mean
deviation of 1. s sample of standard deviation

Example:
A. Find the area that corresponds below z = -1.35
Locate z=-1.35 at the
normal curve, make a
dotted line, then use z-

1.35 to the left.

-3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
z = -1.35= 0.0885
 To find the probability, just multiply by 100.
Z=0.0885 * 100 = 8.85%

1. When the z-value is to the left or below, less than, just
write the value obtained from z-table.
2. When the z-value is to right or above, greater than,
subtract 1 by the value get from the table.
3. When the shaded region is in between of the two z-
value, subtract biggest by the smallest value get from
the z-table.
