EXERCISE 2
DR. JOSE P. RIZAL: A FULLY FUNCTIONING PERSON?
1. Research and define the terms, “fully functioning person” and “healthy personality”
Ans:
Fully functioning person - is one who is in touch with their deepest and innermost
feelings and desires.1 These individuals understand their own emotions and place
deep trust in their own instincts. Unconditional positive regard plays an essential
role in becoming a fully functioning person.
Healthy personality - is a way for a person to act, guided by intelligence and respect
for life, so that personal needs are satisfied and so that the person will grow in
awareness, competence, and the capacity to love the self, the natural environment,
and other people.
2. Enumerate and explain the characteristics of a fully functioning person.
Ans:
Open to experience: both positive and negative emotions accepted. Negative
feelings are not denied, but worked through (rather than resort to ego defense
mechanisms).
Existential living: in touch with different experiences as they occur in life, avoiding
prejudging and preconceptions. Being able to live and fully appreciate the present,
not always looking back to the past or forward to the future (i.e., living for the
moment).
Trust feelings: feeling, instincts and gut-reactions are paid attention to and trusted.
People’s own decisions are the right ones and we should trust ourselves to make the
right choices.
Creativity: creative thinking and risk taking are features of a person’s life. Person
does not play safe all the time. This involves the ability to adjust and change and
seek new experiences.
Fulfilled life: person is happy and satisfied with life, and always looking for new
challenges and experiences.
3. Compare a person with a healthy personality and a person with an unhealthy personality.
Ans: A person with healthy personality, as defined by the Big Five Factor Theory of
Personality, is one who exhibits typical behavior when it comes to eating, talking, and
walking. A healthy individual is one who can display emotional sensitivity and a sense of
humor. However, a person who scored highly on the neuroticism attribute will be seen
as psychologically sick. It is a particular form of psychological or personality disorder
that also makes a person abnormal. According to the psychodynamic theory of
personality, a person is healthy if his or her ego is the most prominent aspect of their
personality. While person with unhealthy personality is one who is discovered involved
in any criminal activity like a serial murderer or anything else due to his strongest super
ego over ego, he is able to deal with his relationships and engagement with others. The
person exhibits irrational behavior and is incapable of thinking clearly.
4. Search pictures that symbolize the functioning of an individual with a healthy personality.
(To those who have wifi connection) Find pictures in a newspaper/magazine which could
symbolize the functioning of an individual with a healthy personality. Cut and paste the
picture, and explain the picture you choose. (To those who doesn’t have a connection)

Ans:
As you can see in the picture above, A person with a healthy personality function well
when they exhibit traits like a child who is emotionally secure, confident in their own
talents, and able to communicate their emotions honestly. because they do not overstress
themselves with negative thoughts
5. Compare Dr. Rizal’s characteristics with the characteristics of a fully functioning person.
Did he have a healthy personality? Explain and support your answers with specific
examples.
Ans: Because he considers the best course of action and even gives his life to protect
his nation and his fellow citizens, Dr. Jose Rizal has a healthy personality. Jose Rizal is
one example of a person who achieved success in a variety of professions, including
medicine, literature, science, agriculture, and engineering. He was hanged at
Bagumbayan for his work on the novels "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo,"
which advocated for reform for us Filipinos. Especially after he was banished to Dapitan,
he had been of great assistance to many. He even instructs kids in agriculture and
aquaculture while caring for the sick and locals of Dapitan.
6. Compare your own personality characteristics with the characteristics of a fully
functioning person. Do you have all the characteristics of a person with a healthy
personality? If your answer is no, what do you intend to do about it?
Ans: Because I occasionally react to situations without considering whether doing so
is beneficial to me or harmful, I do not exhibit all the qualities of a fully functioning
person. In addition, I also refrain from undertaking any tasks. And as a result, I came to
the realization that I needed to alter my personality by surrounding myself with
individuals that inspire me to succeed. I also watch motivational videos in YouTube to
help me become a better person. My most watched channel is Cong TV’s YouTube
channel. His videos really inspired me to become a better person.
7. What are the beneficial effects of majority of Filipino citizens will be able to develop a
healthy personality?
Ans: The beneficial effects include the likelihood that we will be peaceful, unified,
unanimity, and friendly if the majority of Filipino citizens are able to build a healthy
personality. A magnificent nation will be ours. Each of us won't have an inclination
toward suicide since we constantly see the light rather than the evil, and there won't be
any child abuse. Filipinos are capable of coexisting in harmony and peace.
