Introduction
On certain Track-Type Tractors, the Caterpillar Monitoring System may be incorrectly reporting the
Torque Converter Output Temperature. The Torque Converter Output Temperature is supplied to the
Caterpillar Monitoring System by the 4W-9972 Temperature Sender . The following Fault Codes may
be displayed on the Caterpillar Monitoring System:

z MID 30, CID 177, FMI 04 (Temperature sender (Transmission Oil) voltage below normal)

z MID 30, CID 177, FMI 08 (Temperature sender (Transmission Oil) voltage abnormal signal)

The following procedure will determine if the machine is experiencing this problem and will determine
if modifications are necessary.

Background Information
The 4W-9972 Temperature Sender is a single wire sender that has a sender case ground. As series
resistance on the signal wire decreases, the temperature reading on the Caterpillar Monitoring System

will increase. If parallel resistance is added to the body (ground) of the sender, temperature readings on
the Caterpillar Monitoring System will also increase. The Caterpillar Monitoring System drives the
Torque Converter Output Gauge on the Quad Gauge.

When machines are operating at 117 °C (242.6 °F) to 119 °C (246.2 °F), the Caterpillar Monitoring
System may incorrectly determine that the machine temperature is 129 °C (264.2 °F). When this occurs,
the Caterpillar Monitoring System will display one of the following error codes:

z MID 30, CID 117, FMI 04 - Torque Converter Temperature Error

z MID 30, CID 117, FMI 08 - Temperature Sender (transmission oil) Voltage Below Normal (or
abnormal reading)

When these error codes are displayed, nuisance alarms and unnecessary down time will occur.

Not all machines will experience these nuisance alarms. Only machines that are operating in extreme
conditions with high ambient temperatures will be affected.

Troubleshooting and Test Procedure

Troubleshooting

When troubleshooting a Torque Converter Temperature issue (MID 30, CID 177, FMI 04; MID 30, CID
177, FMI 08), refer to Systems Operation, Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, RENR2014,
"Caterpillar Monitoring System".

Prior to performing any tests, it is important to determine if the Torque Converter Oil is truly
overheating or if the Caterpillar Monitoring System is giving a false indication. Refer to the machine's
service manual for troubleshooting procedures. Listed below are issues that might cause high
temperature in Torque Converter Oil.

z Cooler blockage (cooler should be free from debris, dirt, or any other materials)

z Machine brakes - dragging (verify that machine brakes are not dragging)

z Torque converter - inlet and outlet pressure (verify that torque converter inlet and outlet pressure
is set correctly)

z 4W-9972 Temperature Sender (Torque Converter Oil) (ensure that the signal wire at the terminal
is not damaged and is free of corrosion)

z 4W-9972 Temperature Sender (Torque Converter Oil) - body (ensure that the sender body is free
of corrosion and that a good ground path exists between the sender body and the torque converter
housing)

z 4W-9972 Temperature Sender (Torque Converter Oil) - sender signal wire (at the wiring harness,
use a multimeter to check for damage to the temperature sender's signal wire)

After the above-listed steps have been completed and any problems corrected, verify the actual Torque

Converter Output temperature. Compare the actual Torque Converter Output temperature to the Torque
Converter Output temperature that was displayed by the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

When measuring the Torque Converter Output temperature, thermometer temperature probes must be
used. To measure the Torque Converter Output temperature, use the 4C-6500 Digital Thermometer and
the 6V-9130 Temperature Adapter . Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8382, "Use of the 6V9130
Temperature Adapter Group".

Note: In this application, the use of Caterpillar Infrared Thermometers is NOT a valid measuring
method. Machine tests have shown up to a ∆37 °C (∆70 °F) difference between the infrared
thermometer and the digital thermometer probe. The digital thermometer probe measures the flowing oil
inside the torque converter housing the same as the 4W-9972 Temperature Sender (Torque Converter
Oil) .

Thermometer Probe Installation Notes

Install the thermometer probe as close as possible and in the same oil flow as the 4W-9972 Temperature
Sender . The thermometer probe must also be installed at the same depth as the 4W-9972 Temperature
Sender . Use the 4W-9972 Temperature Sender to gauge the depth of the thermometer probe.

D5M and D6M

On the D5M and D6M, an unused test port can be used. This test port is located directly below the 4W-
9972 Temperature Sender . The 4W-9972 Temperature Sender is located on the left side of the torque
converter housing.

D6R and D7R

On the D6R and D7R, an unused test port on the relief valve can be used. This test port is located to the
right (towards the driveshaft) of the 4W-9972 Temperature Sender .

Test Procedure

1. Remove the plug from the unused test port and install the thermometer probe. For display
purposes, route the probe wires to the cab.

2. Connect the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to the service connector. Select "Mode 2 - Gage 2" to
display "Torque Converter Output Temperature" on the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

3. Operate the machine as the machine was operated when the alarm was enunciated.

4. Using the digital thermometer and the Caterpillar Monitoring System, monitor the Torque
Converter Output Temperature.

5. If the difference is less than ∆5 °C (∆9 °F), no action is necessary. If the difference is greater than
∆5 °C (∆9 °F), continue with the next step.

Solution Options

There are two options which will address this issue:

z Option A: Purchase the new flashable Caterpillar Monitoring System for the machine. The
software on the new flashable Caterpillar Monitoring System has been updated to address the
Torque Converter Output Temperature issue. In addition, future updates can simply be flashed
into the new flashable Caterpillar Monitoring System.

z Option B: Purchase the 232-6701 Hardware Kit - Resistor . Install the 232-6701 Hardware Kit -
Resistor in series on the signal wire coming from the 4W-9972 Temperature Sender (Torque
Converter Oil) .

If Option A was chosen, there is no need to perform the following procedure. If Option B was chosen,
perform the following procedure.

Installation Procedure
This procedure is to be performed only on the above-listed machines or on machines that meet the
criteria listed in the Test Procedure. This procedure must only be performed on the Torque Converter
Output Temperature Sender. If this procedure is performed on any other machine or any other
component, serious system damage may occur.

If there are any questions concerning this procedure, consult Caterpillar Product Support. This procedure
is meant to address a software error within the Caterpillar Monitoring System. This procedure is used to
address an error in the software used by the Caterpillar Monitoring System to monitor the Torque
Converter Output Temperature.

1. In order to gain access to the 40-pin connector on the back of the Caterpillar Monitoring System,
remove the machine's dash assembly. To remove the dash assembly, first remove the three bolts
