1 Overview
The intelligent selection unit (IAE) is an additional feature of the modem system for TEM-Evolution
which can be used for both new and existing plants.
The modem system for TEM-Evo allows remote control and remote maintenance or diagnostics of
TEM-Evo plants via the common analog telephone network and using the new functions Visualization
(operation like at TEM-Evo operating terminal) and Remote Programming (for reloading updated
control programs).
If one plant includes several TEM-Evo systems, there is generally one single modem for all systems
installed. To allow access to all gensets, the default connection between the modem and the TEM-Evo
systems uses a selection unit which is switched manually using a rotary switch. This is the reason why
operators have to be present on-site if multiple TEM-Evo systems have to be accessed.
The intelligent selection unit allows to avoid this restriction as it is told by the modem which genset the
caller wants to connect to. No manual operation is necessary any more.
Due to the modular design of the IAE and to the microprocessor used, several tasks other than just
switching to the gensets can be done, such as the connection of up to two central operating terminals
or the automatic submission of fault messages via modem to a service control system.
Thanks to its flexibility the intelligent selection unit can also be used for TEM systems (for detailed
information see the “intelligent selection unit for TEM“ system manual) and even for systems of other
manufacturers such as boiler control systems or similar.
2 Features of performance
• Remote access to the connected TEM-Evo systems without local intervention
• Connection of central operating terminals which can access the connected TEM-Evo systems using
the function keys of the operating terminal or a manual rotary switch
• In case of a fault or an alarm, an alarm signal is sent to a control room (only for option “Fault
message“).
• Versatile and user friendly Windows management program and clear status display for the
monitored systems available; it allows flexible processing of incoming alarm signals such as calling
the task force outside office hours via city call (for further details see the “Remote Monitoring
System - RMS“ system manual)
• Optional disabling of the access to TEM-Evo controls via modem (for service purposes)
• Data transfer between the central operating terminals via modem, e.g., for loading updated
visualization programs
• Up to 12 TEM-Evo controls can be attached, and the Central Operating Terminal option provides
attachment for up to 8 (two central operating terminals) or 10 (one central operating terminal) TEM-
Evo controls.
• The flexible adjustment possibilities permit execution of related tasks such as for TEM systems;
solutions are also provided for systems from other manufacturers (boiler plants or similar).

Each TEM-Evo system in a plant is equipped with an additional module (function selection unit FAE)
which allows to select the operating mode of communication between the TEM-Evo system and the
local operating terminals and the modem attached to the IAE or the central operating terminals.
The function selection unit can be mounted on a rail and has two ports to be connected to the control
unit: one port for visualization and one port for programming. The intelligent selection unit (IAE) can
remotely set the required operating mode of the function selection unit. Furthermore, the access to the
TEM-Evo system via the IAE can be stopped using the function selection unit, if this is required during
service.
The distance between the TEM-Evo systems and the IAE can be up to 100 m.
For the fault message option the IAE has two additional 24 V inputs for each TEM-Evo system which
the IAE uses to receive fault and alarm messages. These signals are usually triggered by the intelligent
strip terminal of the TEM-Evo system.
The modem which is connected to the analog telephone network is placed directly next to the IAE.
Up to two central operating terminals can be connected to the IAE; the distance between these
operating terminals and the IAE can be at most 100 m. Only one data line is required to connect the
operating terminals; the TEM-Evo systems can also be selected for visualization using this data line.
Then, the TEM-Evo system which is to be displayed on the central operating terminal can be selected
using function keys at the operating terminal.
Another way of selecting a TEM-Evo system than using function keys of the operating terminal consists
of using a separate selector switch connected to the IAE and which allows to select the TEM-Evo
system to be displayed on the central operating terminal.
If the IAE does not receive any switching command, it will be checked if the remote access is enabled.
A switch on the IAE allows the remote access via modem to be generally disabled. This takes into
account the need for security of many site operators, who generally disconnect the modem from the
telephone network or the power supply so that no fault messages can be issued any more.
If no operating terminal with higher priority is connected to the selected TEM-Evo system when a
switching command is received, the IAE switches through to the selected TEM-Evo system, which
allows visualization via modem.
If the selected TEM-Evo system has an own (local) operating terminal, the local operating terminal is
disconnected from the control system; thus, visualization is not possible any more. This avoids
contradictory commands being sent to the TEM-Evo control system by the operator of the local TEM-
Evo system operating terminal operator and the central operating terminal operator.
The IAE supports up to two operating terminals of this kind which can be installed e.g. in a control
room and on the control station in the engine room.
The TEM-Evo system that you want to visualize on the central operating terminal can be selected
either using switching commands which are issued via function keys from the display or using a
manual selector connected to the intelligent selection unit.
The modem and the operating terminals which are connected to the IAE follow a priority order. If two
devices try to access the same TEM-Evo system at the same time, the device with the higher priority
will be connected to the TEM-Evo system.
As soon as the IAE recognizes an occurring fault it dials the set number of the modem of the service
control station. If the establishment of a connection fails, the dialing process is repeated. If the
connection with the set telephone number definitely fails, an alternative phone number can be dialed
and the message is sent to this number. This alternative number can be e.g. the phone number of the
service control station of a near subsidiary.
Often customers want to be informed when a fault occurs. In this case settings can be made to have a
message sent to a second phone number at the same time as the message is sent to the control
station. If this number is busy the attempt to issue the message is repeated several times.
When the connection to the control stations concerned is established, the IAE issues a message which
identifies the site and tells the reason of the call. It also specifies the time the fault occurred. If more
than one messages are pending before the connection to the control station is established all
messages will be submitted in one go.
If a modem connection is already active when a fault occurs, the system waits for disconnection before
it tries to issue the message. When the genset is changed and the disconnection has taken place, the
IAE informs the caller connected via the modem about any faults which have not yet been indicated.
In case of a voltage loss occurring before the IAE had the opportunity to indicate the fault, another
attempt will be made to inform the control station when the voltage has come back.
The following modules resp. extension levels are available for the intelligent selection unit:
• Voltage supply with attachment for the modem, switch for remote access release, displays e.g. for
permanent alarm calls, self test errors
This module is already contained in the IAE basic version.
Altogether, at most six attachment components for TEM-Evo controls and central operating terminals
can be integrated, up to two components of which can be allocated to operating terminals.
In a maximum extension design without a central operating terminal, twelve TEM-Evo controls can be
attached (6 modules for every two TEM-Evo controls). For each connected central operating terminal,
the number of TEM-Evo controls that can be connected is less two, i.e., the number is 10 with one
central operating terminal and 8 with two central operating terminals.
It is not planned to retrofit these attachment modules for TEM-Evo systems to the fault
message option. If this option is required later the attachment modules have to be replaced.
The modem is connected via a sub D connector; the connection line is shipped with the system.
The intelligent selection unit is in a housing with the dimensions of 200 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm (W x
H x D when wall mounted).
The housing can be mounted on a 35 mm rail conforming to DIN EN 50 022 or directly wall mounted
using wall brackets.
9 Configuration possibilities
The configuration of the intelligent selection unit can be executed remotely via modem. This allows the
different parameters and settings to be variable.
These parameters can easily be modified using any common terminal program.
The parameters are saved according to special levels using passwords. So only the system supplier
can modify system sensitive settings.
• Characteristics of the telephone port used (extension line, switched line etc.)
• Priority between the modem and the connected central operating terminal, if both are requesting the
same TEM-Evo control is required
• Release of the message function separately for each genset connected in order to avoid permanent
faulty message triggering during service periods
• Phone number to submit a fault or alarm message, generally a service control station. An
alternative number can be configured, if required, to be called when the main number is not
available.
• Second phone number to be called at the same time as the main number when a fault or an alarm
has occurred
• Number and time interval between attempts to issue messages if a control station is not available
The configuration is stored in a fixed storage area and it is voltage loss proof.
10 Diagnostics possibilities
The intelligent selection unit offers different procedures of self-diagnostics and error recognition which
can be queried remotely via modem.
For initiation and debugging as well as for displaying the operating status the IAE displays several
panels which allow to draw conclusions about possible errors. These include in particular panels for
data transfer and the digital input status.
11 Security
If a caller attempts to connect to a TEM-Evo system he receives a message telling him that remote
access is disabled. There is no point in checking again with the operator. If a modem connection is
active when the switch is activated, this connection is interrupted with an error message.
In spite of the remote access being disabled, the intelligent selection unit can continue sending fault
messages to a control station (fault message option) or can be remotely configured.
12 Site-specific requirements
The following site-specific requirements have to be met to operate the intelligent selection unit:
• Voltage supply 24 V DC (± 15 %, max. 0.5 V residual ripple), power consumption < 1 A, fuse
protection 3 A
• Direct in-dialing enabled telephone connection with full exchange line authorization in order to allow
the callback when the logon succeeded and to optionally issue alarm calls
