ABOUT THIS MODULE

This module has been carefully crafted to ensure the delivery, understanding,
and transfer to real life applications the Most Essential Learning Competencies
(MELCs) in Computer 7 as required by the Department of Education. The activities
and assessments are aligned with the competencies
to ensure that learner achievement is optimally
reached. The parent or guardian is provided space to
get involved in the module (feedback, suggestions,
and observation). The learner is given self-
improvement opportunities through reflections,
personal prayer and journals. Values integration is
given a very important part in the module.
In this unit, the standards are:
CONTENT STANDARD
The learners will understand the history of Computers and its
evolution from ancient times up to present, and the capabilities of modern
computers as well as the limitations.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learners are expected to be able to know how to manipulate
the components of a computer system, the basic operation of computing,
and how the computer works.

FORMATION STANDARD
The learner will become a responsible catholic in providing Christ-
centered services and helping others in a way that both of them can produce a
combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.

For this week, our learning target is listed below. Monitor your progress in this week’s
module using this checklist of learning target.

THE COMPUTER
A computer is a fast electronic computational
device operating under the control of instructions stored
in its own memory unit that can accept data (input),
perform prescribed operations on the data (processing),
procedure results from the processing (output), and store
the results for furniture use (storage).
The term computer is derived from the word
“compute” that suggests computation or calculation. So, a
computer is normally considered as a calculating device
that can perform arithmetic operations at enormous
speed. But this idea is misleading, although this is one of the functions of a computer. More
than 80% of the works done by computers today are non-numerical or non-computational in
nature. A computer can work efficiently if given a proper instruction through a program.
A program is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. This program will
not work effectively in the computer unless somebody (computer user) will manipulate it
correctly. The computer needs outside intervention to work accurately. Here are some
advantages of a computer.
Generates information at high speed
Processes data accurately
Saves and retrieves information
Perform logical operations
Communicates with other users or with other machines
Although a computer has all the power to process data and to produce good
information, it is not a magical device. Like man, it has several limitations:
Cannot generate information on its own
- A computer cannot produce information unless it is fed with correct data or
sequence of instructions.
Inability to derive its own meaning from objects
- A computer cannot respond to human emotions, it needs human thinking to
analyze the output. For computers, the data fed into it are meaningless. Only
the end user can evaluate what the computer produces.
Cannot come up with original decisions
- All the information produced by the computer are based on the sequence fed
into it.
Cannot correct wrong instructions
- A computer is not capable to filter as it executes only the correct instructions
and discards the erroneous ones. It can only prompt the user that an error has
been committed in the process of executing the program.
Subject to occasional breakdown
- Most storage devices, such as hard drives, are mechanical devices, which can
become worn out and thus are prone to failure. A storage devices is often the
first component to malfunctions in a computer.
