s 3. Detection principle
3-1 Catalytic combustion method

If the air containing an inflammable gas comes into contact with a catalyzer- heated appreciably,
the molecules of the inflammable gas react on oxygen in the air(catalytic combustion reaction),
producing reaction heat (catalytic combustion heat).
The produced heat is proportional to the concentration.of the gas providing that the
concentration of the inflammable gas is low enough for a perfect combustion.
Accordingly, a Wheatstone bridge is formed by using two filaments whose electric resistance is
the same as shown in Fig. 3-1 . ' ’
One filament is exposed to the gas to be measured (detection side Fl), and the other is sealed in
clean air (comparison side F2).
The bridge is preheated up by electric current to a particular temperature at which the gas will
produce a catalytic combustion.
If the inflammable gas touches the detection side filament, the temperature of Fl will go up by
the combustion heat, increasing its electric resistance, producing an electric current between A
and В on the bridge, by which gas concentration can be detected.

Fig. 3-1 Basic circuit diagram, for catalytic combustion method

3-2 Galvanic cell method

The diaphragm galvanic cell is a system in which heterogeneous electric conductors (at least one
of them must be an electrolyte or ionic conductor like an electrolytic solution) are connected in
series and the chemical compositions of the end phase are the same.
The construction model of the oxygen sensor applying the diaphragm galvanic cell is shown in
Fig. 3-2.

Ог -

Ml М2
~o Ml : Gold (Cathode)
М2 : Lead (Anode)
S : Electrolytic solution

Fig. 3-2 Construction model of oxygen sensor

The reaction principle of the oxygen sensor is as follows referring to Fig. 3-2 above.
Connect electrodes Ml and М2 with a conductor, supplying oxygen to the surface of Ml, and the
following reduction reaction (l) takes place on Ml side.

( 1)
O 2 + 4 H ‘ + 4 e" ^ 2 Н г О (Acid electrolyte)
Os'+ 2 H 2O + 4 e ' — ♦ 4 O H (Alkaline electrolyte)

Simultaneously an oxidation reaction (2) takes place on М2.

2Pb + 2 H 2O — 2 P bО + 4 H + + 4 e ' (Acid, electrolyte) (2)

2 P b + 2OH" —* 2 P b О + 2 H 2O + 4 e " . (Alkaline electrolyte)

In electrochemistry, the electrode from which positive charges move toward a solution is called
an anode (positive electrode), while that where positive charges move from the solution to the
electrode phase is called a cathode (negative electrode).

. From this reason, with the oxygen sensor, the gold electrode side is called a cathode (negative
electrode), and the lead electrode side is called an anode (positive electrode).
For a gas penetrating membrane, that of fluororesin or the like is used through which"oxygen gas
easily passes.
Between the membrane"and the cathode is formed a thin electrolytic layer, the oxygen gas having
passed through the membrane is dissolved in the electrolytic layer.
The dissolved oxygen produces a reduction reaction on the cathode and concurrently an oxidation
reaction on the anode, thus a reduction current flows in proportion to the oxygen concentration.
An oxygen concentration is readable from the terminal potential on the load resistance connected
between the anode and cathode external to the sensor.
This electric potential is called the output of the oxygen sensor.
Since the electric potential is proportional to the concentration of oxygen, the concentration of
oxygen can be determined by measuring the electric potential at that time.
The above is a reaction principle of the oxygen sensor.

•Age-based characteristics of oxygen sensor ,

The products on the lead electrode are dissolved into the electrolytic solution by the following
reaction..

PbO + 2 Н С Ю , - P.b (C l O d г + НгО ( 3)

ЙЪеп Pb(CIO* ) 2 has been saturated, it is precipitated oh the surface of the lead electrode.
If the whole surface is covered with it, no more electrode reaction would proceed, when the life
of the’electrode would be over.
By surveying age-based characteristics of oxygen sensors in the past, we can guarantee the life
of the oxygen sensor for about one year.

6. Piping

A copper tube. 6mni in 0. D., is used from gas collector to the alarm panel.
Clean each tube by blowing dry air through it to remove metal chips, dust and other foreign
matter before joining it to the alarm panel: otherwise gas may not be sucked in or may be retarded
in sucking. Further, be sure that each system has been joined properly when cleaning the piping. .
Arrange the piping with a minimum bends and without sharp corners to avoid retardation in sucking.
For the exhaust piping, use a copper tube, 15mm in 0. D., arranging it to a safe place where there
is no possibility to catch fire.

12. Operation

12-1 Changingover measuring points

® One alarm unit measures gas concentration of PUMP ROOM by changeingover sample gas in order.
Gas measurement is carried out by sucking.a sample gas from each of four measuring points
in order through a solenoid valve.
There are two methods, automatic and manual, in changingover measuring points.
Measuring point lamp indicates the point of which measuring is being made at that time.
© Operation is stopped in case of gas concentration alarm , pump failure or alarm unit
failure while AUTO/MANUAL changing over.
(Operation starts again when the alarm or failure is released.)

(1) Automatic changeover operation with the measuring point AUTO/MANUAL switch in “AUTO”
position, measuring points are changed-over automatically every 2 minutes.

(2) Manual changeover operation with the measuring point AUTO/MANUAL switch in “MANUAL”
position, measuring points are changed-over each time when the measuring point selector
switch is pressed, thus selecting the measuring point to be measured continuously.
(Changeover operation should be made under 109SLEL of the preset alarm level after-resetting
alarming.)

12-2 HIGH alarm operation

12-2-1 Inflammable gas (H. C)

When the inflammable gas concentration exceeds the alarm set point (10%LEL),the .ALARM UNIT
will operate as follows.

(1) When alarm is given :

® The gas concentration high alarm LED(ALl) of the alarm unit flickers in red,and the bar
meter LED for the alarm set point also flickers to give an alarm. •
© The alarm buzzer will be sounded.
© Sampling point measures continuously the same place where the alarm is given.
® The external alarm contacts will be actuated;
NO. I samp, point :Between terminal NO. 7 and 8 : closed — ► open
N0.2 samp, point :Between terminal N0. 9 and 10 : closed — * open
N0.3 samp, point :Between terminal N0.11 and 12 : closed — ► open
NO. 4 sBmp. point :Between terminal NO. 13 and 14 : closed — ► open

(2) When the buzzer is stopped :

Press alarm 'reset switch “AL. RESET” on the GAS DETECTING PANEL one time and the alarm
buzzer stops, but the alarm is not released until gas concentration falls below the alarm
setting level.
Input it between 3 and 4 when you do a buzzer stop from the the outside.

(3) When the alarm is reset :

The alarm is released by pressing the alarm reset switch “AL. RESET” once again after gas
concentration has fallen below the alarm setting level (10%LEL), then LED lamp(ALl) turns
off.

12-2-2 Oxygen (Oz)

When the oxygen concentration decreases to the alarm set point (18%) or less, the ALARM
UNIT will operate as follows.

(1) When alarm is given :

ф The gas concentration low alarm LED(ALl) of the alarm unit flickers in red,and the bar
meter LED for the alarm set point also flickers to give an alarm.
© The alarm buzzer will be sounded.
© Sampling point measures continuously the same place where the alarm is given.
@ The external alarm contacts will be actuated.
NO. 1 samp, point : Between terminal NO. 7 and 8 : closed — * open
. NO. 2 samp, point : Between terminal NO. 9 and 10 : closed — ► open
N0.3 samp, point :'Between terminal N0.11 and 12 : closed — * open
N0.4 samp, point.: Between terminal N0:13 and 14 : closed — » open

(2) When the buzzer is stopped :

Press alarm reset switch “AL. RESET” on the GAS DETECTING PANEL one time arid the alarm
buzzer stops, but the alarm is not released until gas concentration has exceeds the alarm
setting level.
Input it between 3 and 4 when you do a buzzer stop from the outside.

(3) When the alarm is reset :

The alarm is released by pressing the alarm reset switch “AL. RESET” once again after gas
concentration has exceeded the alarm setting level (18%), then LED lamp(ALl) turns .off and
the external alarm contacts return.

12-2-3 Inflammable gas detection in panel

When the inflammable gas concentration exceeds the alarm set point (30%LEL),the ALARM UNIT
will operate as follows.

(1) When alarm is given : -

ф The gas concentration high alarm LED of the alarm meter flickers in red.
© The alarm buzzer will be sounded.
© The external alarm contacts will be actuated and all of power supply except in-panel
detection.

(2) When the buzzer is stopped :

Press alarm reset switch “RESET" of the gas alarm meter (FA-470) and the alarm buzzer
stops.
Input it between 3 and 4 when you do a buzzer stop from the outside.

(3) When the alarm is reset :

The alarm is released by pressing the alarm reset switch “AL. RESET” once again after gas
concentration has fallen below the alarm setting (30%LEL), then LED lamp (ALARM) turns off
and power supply except in-panel detection.
