Lab 4

The document details an experiment using paper chromatography to separate food dyes. Primary colors like yellow, blue and red consisted of a single component, while secondary colors like green and purple separated into multiple components. The difference in solubility of dye components allows them to be separated through the chromatography process.

Keenan Enrilsen Lab 4: Separation of food dyes using paper chromatography 21/7/21

Aim: To separate food dyes using paper chromatography

Equipment and procedure: See STAWA page 16

Results/observations:

Colour of dye Observations

Black Red/purple on the bottom and blue on the top.
Green Green strip on the left, yellow on the right
bottom and blue towards the top.
Blue Pure blue
Yellow Pure yellow
Red Pure red
Purple Darker purple/red on the bottom, lighter red on
top and blue at very top.

Processing of results and questions:

1. Identify those food colourings or dyes that consisted of a single component, and those
that contained more than one component.
The primary colours consisted of a single component, yellow, blue, and red. Secondary
colours such as green, purple consisted of 2 or more components.
2. What property of the food colourings enables them to be separated in this way?
The difference in solubilities of the different components into NaCl water allows them to be
separated.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, we were able to separate food dyes using paper chromatography. For example, from
our results, we found that black dye separated into red and blue, while green separated into yellow
and blue. Since red, yellow, and blue are primary colours, they did not separate into separate
components.

Evaluation:

Overall, we were able to work efficiently and safely together as a group. We completed all our work
in a timely manner, and communicated effectively and assigned each other tasks, such as gathering
the equipment, measuring, and evaluating results. A possible source of error could be the possible
contamination of some dyes, which would have affected the observed colours after the
chromatography process.
