Introduction
Headphones and earphones have become ingrained in our everyday routines. Remove the noise
from your environment if you wish to disconnect from the outer world. Then simply lose
yourself in your music, and what better way to do it than with a pair of headphones?
When listening to music or watching TV or a movie, earphones are ideal. You can also use them
to study if you have those audio courses on tape, or listen to them when you want to read a book
but don't have the time.
Professionally, headphones are used in video editing and sound integration, as well as for
recording. In the field of communications, headsets integrate the functions of a microphone, a
phone, and a headphone.
Earphones are a pair of small speaker drivers that are worn over the user's ears or around the
head. They are electroacoustic transducers that convert electrical signals into corresponding
sounds. Headphones allow one user to listen to an audio source personally, as opposed to using
speakers that emit a sound to the outside so that everyone nearby can hear it. Headphones are
also called earphones, earphones, or colloquially cans. Circumaural (“around the ear”) and
supra-aural (“above the ear”) headphones use straps on the head to hold the speaker in place.
Another type, called earphones or earphones, consists of individual units that are inserted into the
user's ear canal. The third type is bone conduction headphones. It usually wraps around the back
of the head and places it in front of the ear canal so that it remains open.
Earphones link to a signal source such as an audio amplifier, radio, CD player, portable media
player, mobile phone, video game console, or electronic musical instrument via a cord or
wireless technology like Bluetooth, DECT, or FM radio. The earliest headphones were created in
the late 1800s for telephone operators to use to keep their hands free. Initially, the audio quality
was poor, but the advent of high-fidelity headphones was a step forward.
Earphones are available in a variety of audio reproduction quality options. Headsets built for
phone use often do not have the same high fidelity as audiophile-grade versions designed for
music listening. Cable-connected headphones often have a 1/4 inch (6.35mm) or 1/8 inch
(3.5mm) phone port for connecting to the audio source. Wireless stereo earphones use Bluetooth
connectivity to send audio signals via radio waves from sources such as cellphones and digital
players. Beginning in the 1980s, the Walkman effect caused headphones to be used in public
locations such as sidewalks, grocery stores, and public transportation.
