SMART Goal Setting
Let’s start with what the SMART acronym stands for:
Specific – being clear on the goal helps you to take action on it and actually achieve it
Measurable – helps you to determine if and when the goal is complete and allows
measurement of progress during and after
Achievable or Actionable – you are able to achieve and have control over the process
Realistic – it has to be realistic and something that you can truly accomplish
Timebound – if it’s not attached to a timeframe, it will never get done
Going through the process of setting SMART goals is an iterative process. You will find that you
are going over your goals multiple times and making changes as you apply the different
components of the SMART process. Give yourself grace and definitely don’t get frustrated.
Each time you refine your goals, you will gain a better understanding of them and they will be
planted deeper for you to truly own them.
Specific
Many people struggle at the onset with setting goals simply because they don’t make them
specific enough. The more specific your goals, the easier it will be to achieve them. When you
have clarity on the goal then it’s easier to make decisions in our lives and we know exactly what
we are trying to achieve.
As you begin to think about your goals, I want you to ask yourself a few questions, starting with
the most obvious, which is “what goal do you want to accomplish?” Next, “why is the goal
important to you?” Then, “what do you need in order to accomplish the goal?” Finally, “what
obstacles might get in the way of you achieving the goal?”
Measurable
If you can’t measure the goal then you can’t determine if you reached it or not. There must be
a clear way of measuring your success with achieving the goal.
If you can’t prove to someone else that the goal is complete, then your goal measure is likely
not specific enough. The best test for measurability is to ask “If someone asked me about the
results of my goal can I clearly articulate the way the I determined that it was completed.
Actionable/Achievable
Your goals should be action-oriented, which means you can take action to make it happen. If
the path to reaching the goal is completely out of your control then it is not truly actionable and
you will likely fail to complete the goal.
Making the goal action-oriented also encourages you to write active and not passive goals.
Realistic
The goal should be reasonably within your reach. It’s important that we feel good about the
goals that we set and that we see the possibility of achieving them.
You should ask yourself whether or not it is physically possible for you to complete the goal. If
it isn’t then you should consider establishing a goal that is more realistic. Consider setting “goal
ranges” with a low-end of achievement, mid-level and a stretch-level. This way, if you aim for
the low-end of the achievement and see that you can reasonably push yourself above it, then
you can celebrate a significant win by reaching the mid-level or stretch-level of the goal.
When you set unrealistic goals, you are much more likely to lose motivation and abandon the
goal.
Timebound
When you don’t attach a date of completion for the goal, you are much less motivated to place
focus on it. You have less incentive to work hard and stay diligent in the process.
Pick a date that you find inspiring, but not overwhelming. You can also consider using date
ranges (Minimum, Target and Stretch)
