Parallel Circuit With FOUR Lamps

1. The document provides instructions for students to construct a parallel circuit with four lamps and test it using a multimeter. 2. Students are asked to draw the circuit diagram, build the physical circuit, and record voltage, current, resistance, and wattage readings for each lamp both individually and for the total circuit. 3. By removing one lamp, students can observe how the circuit behaves and note any changes in the other lamps to understand Kirchhoff's laws and the differences between parallel and series circuits.

Parallel Circuits
Performance activity in groups of TWO

1. Draw a parallel circuit comprising of FOUR lamps controlled by a switch S1 (and connected to a
power cord).(AC power supply)

2. Construct the parallel Circuit comprising of FOUR lamps using conduit and conduit accessories.

3. Using the digital multimeter, carry out and record the following test on the circuit and lamps.

a. Without power connected, conduct short circuit test across conductors

b. L&N ___________, L&E______________, E&N __________________
c. Supply Voltage across live and neutral ____________________________

e. Wattage rating of lamp 1 f. Wattage Rating of lamp 2

g. Wattage rating of lamp 3 h. Wattage rating of lamp 4

i. Resistance of Lamp 1 j. Resistance of Lamp 2

k. Resistance of Lamp 3 l. Resistance of Lamp 4

m. Voltage across Lamp 1 n. Voltage across Lamp 2

o. Voltage across Lamp 3 p. Voltage across Lamp 4

4. With all lamps connected and the circuit operational, conduct a test to determine the total
circuit current. Record the results here _______________________

5. Measure the current in each lamp and record the values below

Current in lamp 1 Current in lamp 2 Current in lamp 3 Current in lamp 4

6. Remove one lamp and note what happens to the other lamps. State your findings in the box
below.

Discussion

7. Discuss the ammeter and voltmeter readings in respect to kirchoff’s voltage and current laws.
Discuss the intensity of the lamps in the parallel circuit as compared to the series circuit.

8. What is the advantage of using this type of circuit in your home as compared to the series
circuit.
