Probability is one of my favourite topics — you find out all kinds of interesting things.
To find the probability of something, divide the number of ways it can happen by the

total number of possible outcomes. Try these questions and you'll get the idea.
Q1 An ordinary pack of 52 cards is shuffled and you choose a card at random.
Give the probability that the card is:
a) red
b) a heart
c) a 3
d) a court card (Jack, Queen or King)
e) not a court card
f) an even number
g) a number less than 6 Probabilities are always bet
(assuming an Ace is higher than a 6) ween 0 and 1,
so they're sometimes given
as fractions
h) an Ace and sometimes as decimals
.
i) the Ace of Spades.
Give your answers as fractions in their simplest forms.
Q3 A bag contains ten balls. Five are red, three are yellow
and two are eyeballs. What is the probability of picking out:
a) a yellow ball
b) a red ball
c) an eyeball
d) a red ball or an eyeball
e) a blue ball
Q4 In a party game, tickets numbered from 1 to 100 are put in a hat and have to be
picked out blindfolded. You win a prize if you pick a ticket number ending in 7.
a) What is P(win), assuming you can only pick once?
b) What is P(not win), assuming you can only pick once?
Give your answers as fractions in their simplest forms.

Q5 Spinner A is divided into 4 equal parts: red, black, white and pink.
Spinner B is divided into 3 equal parts: white, red and black.
a) Complete the chart below showing all possible outcomes:
Spinner B
White Red Black
Red RW
Spinner A
Black
White WB
Pink A B
You should always use a table like this to
b) How many different outcomes are there? write down all the "possible outcomes" —
you can't miss any out that way.
c) Assuming the spinners are unbiased find
the probabilities of the following:
i) both spinners show red
ii) both spinners show the same colour
iii) at least one spinner shows black
iv) neither spinner shows white
v) the outcome doesn't include pink.
Give all your answers as fractions in their simplest forms.
d) If the experiment with the two spinners is repeated 60 times,
estimate the number of times the outcome RR will turn up.
Can you be certain that this outcome will turn up?
e) If the experiment is done more times, No. of times RR turns up
what can you say about the fraction: ?
No. of times experiment is done
