Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Statistics and Probability I. Objectives

The lesson plan discusses probability distributions of discrete random variables. It will have students illustrate and compute probabilities for a discrete random variable, and construct a probability mass function and histogram. The lesson will review past topics, include an activity with coin flips, and examples constructing probability distributions and histograms for random variables based on coin toss outcomes. Students will then evaluate given probability distributions to check if they are valid.

SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:

a) Illustrate the probability distribution for a discrete random variable and its
properties;
b) Compute probabilities corresponding to a given discrete random variable; and

c) Construct the probability mass function of a discrete random variable and its
corresponding histogram.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Probability Distribution of Discrete Random Variable

C. Materials: Laptop, Presentation Slides

III. Procedure/Methodology

A. Preliminary Activities:
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance
 Setting of Standards
B. Lesson Proper:
 Review
 The teacher will recall the past lesson by asking questions to the students.
 Motivation
 The teacher will flip a coin 10 times and let the students guess the
probability of heads showing after 10 flips.
 Activity
 The students will be tasked to find the probability of events.

 Analysis
The students will answer the following questions:
1) Based on your activity, what are the steps in finding the probability of
events?
2) What can you infer from the probabilities of the events?

 Abstraction
The Probability of a discrete random variable is a list, a table, a graph, or a
formula of probabilities associated with each of its possible values. It is also
sometimes called the probability distribution function or the probability mass
function.

Example: Two (2) coins are tossed. Let X be the random variable representing the
number of heads that occur. Find the probability of each of the values of the random
variable X.

Step 1: List the Possible outcomes and assign their corresponding values of the
random variable X.

Possible Outcomes Value of the Random

Variable X (Number of
Heads)
HH 2
HT 1
TH 1
TT 0

Step 2: Find the probability of the values of the random variable through relative
frequency approach which is dividing the number of occurrences of a value of the
random variable with the cardinality of the sample space.

Random 0 1 2
Variable X
(Number of

Probability, ¼ ½ ¼
P(X)

Properties of Discrete Probability Distribution:

1. The probability of each outcome is between 0 and 1.

0 ≤ P(X) ≤ 1.
2. The sum of all probabilities should be 1.
ΣP(X)=1

 Application

Constructing the probability distribution and histogram for the random variables
described in a situation.

1.) Three coins are tossed. Let Y be the random variable representing the
number of tails that occur. Find the values of the random variable Y.
