TASK 3: I REMEMBER

A Poison Tree
Title and Author: By: William Blake

A Poison Tree by William Blake is a poem

that focuses on the emotion of anger and deals
Message and content with the darker side of human psyche. It uses
metaphor, antithesis and biblical associations
to highlight the self-damage by surpassing
anger. The emphasis is on letting go of
negative emotions and moving with life before
this energy impacts on health and well-being of
others.
Furthermore, the poet used a metaphoric style.
An apple depicts the author vengeance; the
tree depicts loss of patience, underneath which
kills his enemy. It has a four sets of rhyming
couplets. Each stanza remains continued to
the next, and gives the poem a hurried, almost
furtive tone that matches the secretive deeds
carried in the darkness of poem’s content.
Thus, the author has clearly stated his anger
and feeling of vengeance in his heart. Though
he forgive his friend but it hasn’t and will never
forgive enemy for the wrongs that he has done,
and the hurt he has caused to him. Therefore,
the feeling of anger shaped up and now he can
do anything to make his enemy suffer and pay
for his karmas. However, the poet does not
even wish to wait for the justice of karmas; he
wishes to put an end to his vengeance by
murdering his enemy on his own, and so he
does. He kill or murder his enemy in the end,
and gets back his peace of mind.

There’s a lot of things that more likely

readers may like in the poem. Personally liked
the metaphoric style used by the author. A tree
Things I like about the poem to show what happens to seed, the begin of his
anger. Ultimately, the anger bears fruit, the
apple on the tree. When the foe sneaks into
the author’s garden and eat the apple, the foe
dies from its poison. In short, the author’s
anger killed his foe. Moreover, the poem made
me realized that anger should not suppressed
me. One must learn to forgive and let go of
negative emotions, and move on to the next
chapter of life. Indeed, the poem is the
masterpiece of realization.

ASSESMENT:

1. What makes fiction different from non-fiction text?

Fiction is fabricated and based on author’s imagination. It often refers to a plot, settings and
characters created from the imagination. Non-fiction, by contrast, is factual and reports on the
true events. Usually, non-fiction has higher standard to uphold than fiction. Therefore, If it reports
truth, it is non-fiction. If it stretches the truth, it is fiction.

2. What are the salient features of prose, poetry, and dram as forms of literature and arts?

Salient feature of Prose

 most organic of writing style
 natural narrative inspired by how the world digest language
 colloquial take on fiction

Salient feature of Poetry

 arouse emotions
 allows the particular to represent the more general
 have a transcendental quality
 embodiment of human values not a kind of syntax
 give universal and enduring thought of life

Salient features of Drama

 artistically presented with dialogues

 meant to perform on stage
 structured with dialogues that known as script
 comprises of characters, plot, setting as well as symbolism
 impactful and real
3. For you, what image will best represent literature as a significant human experience? Explain
your answer.

The strength of scenic writing lies in its ability to evoke sensual images. Among the strangest
illusions, I think the best image that represent literature is the impulsivity of fire and withholding
emotions of ice. This represent the human experience all throughout the circumstances of life.
Moreover, these two images connotes the contrast between what was expected and what is
actually happened. The impulsivity of fire is the omission of negative connotation about human
experience while the withholding emotions of ice connotes the positive experience. Now, in a
certain aspect or concept like literature, the negative connotation may create a significant
masterpiece in literature, likewise in the positive connotation. Therefore, literature is the omission
of negative and positive human experience that written in a book of literature as an art.

2. What do you think is the best approach in teaching literature? Why?

I think the Language-Based approach is the best approach in teaching literature. Why?
Because it encourages students to be actively participate in the process of understanding the
meaning of text. It also focuses on phonology (sounds), graphology (visual effect of the text),
semantics (meaning), dialect (variations of standard English), register (tone), period
(archaisms) and function (message in the text). These guides students to express their
opinions towards a text and to generate language in every activities. This is done by providing
students an exposure to the target language and connecting them to a specific vocabulary and
other aspects of the language where literary text are seen as means to improve language
proficiency.
3. Share your experiences in one of your literature classes and identify the approaches used by
your former literature teacher.

Way back in high school, one of our teacher in literature discussed the Greek Literature. It’s all
about Gods and Goddesses. Actually, we are familiar in some names of God and Goddesses
like Cupid and Psyche, Hades, Athena, Perseus, but the rest are still unknown to us. Aside
from we can’t identify the names, also the pronunciation and their information left us anxious.
So, what our teacher did? He use the paraphrastic approach. He re-tell the text to us and
simple the terms to explain what are they and who are they. In short, the complicated ones
made into simpler for us to understand easily.
