Learner’s Tasks
Lesson Overview
To evaluate an algebraic expression means to substitute the given value for the variable
then simplify the resulting numerical expression following the
PEMDAS/GEMDAS/BODMAS rules.
Steps to follow in evaluating algebraic expressions:
1. Substitute the given value for each variable.
2. Simplify first the expressions inside the grouping symbols.
3. Simplify the expressions with exponents.
4. Perform all multiplications and divisions from left to right.
5. Perform all additions and subtractions from left to right.

A. 2 B. 6 C. 8
2. 8𝑎b + 3𝑏c − 10 if 𝑎 = 1, b = 2, c = 3
A. 20 B. 24 C. 18
B. Direction: Evaluate the following algebraic expression using 𝒙 = 𝟑, 𝒚 = −𝟐, 𝒛 = 𝟒.
3. 5𝑥2 − 4𝑥𝑦 + 𝑧2
4. 𝑦3 + (𝑥2− 2𝑧)
5. 4 (𝑥 + 𝑦)2 + 4𝑥− 3𝑧
ACTIVITY 2
Direction: Add the following Polynomials
1. (3𝑚3− 4𝑚 + 5) , (-6𝑚3− 7𝑚2 + 3𝑚− 9)
2. (-12𝑎2𝑏2 + 5𝑎𝑏2− 2𝑎𝑏) , (2𝑎𝑏2 + 5𝑎𝑏− 6) , (6𝑎2𝑏2 + 2𝑎𝑏2 + 8𝑎𝑏 − 15)

In subtracting polynomials, we should consider the following:
• only similar terms can be subtracted;
• to subtract polynomials, change the sign of the subtrahend then proceed to addition
rule; and
• remember that subtraction is adding the negative of the quantity.
Example 1:
(5𝑥 ) − (13𝑥 )
Solution:
5𝑥
– 13𝑥 Arrange like terms in the same column
5𝑥
+ (−13𝑥) Change the sign of the subtrahend then proceed to
−𝟖𝒙 addition rule.
Example 2:
2𝑥2− 15𝑥 + 25
– 3𝑥2 + 12𝑥− 18
Solution:
2𝑥2 – 15𝑥 + 25 Change the sign of the subtrahend then proceed
+ (−3𝑥2− 12𝑥 + 18) to addition rule
−𝒙 – 𝟐𝟕𝒙 + 𝟒3 Add like terms by adding their coefficients with
𝟐
their signs
Example 3:
Subtract 3𝑥3 – 2𝑥2 + 4 from −8𝑥2 + 7𝑥 –9
Solution:
-8𝑥2 + 7𝑥 – 9
− 3𝑥3 – 2𝑥2 +4 Arrange like terms in the same column
ACTIVITY 3
Direction: Subtract the following Polynomials
1. (8𝑥2− 5) − (6𝑥2 + 2𝑥− 10)
2. (15𝑝− 16𝑟 + 21𝑠) − (6𝑝− 9𝑟 + 28𝑠)
3. (40𝑎𝑏 + 7𝑎2𝑏2) − (9𝑎𝑏− 11𝑎2𝑏2)
Formative Test
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answers on your paper.
1. Evaluate 3x – 2y + 5 when x = 2 and y = 4.
A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4 2.

2. Maria sold apples in the market. She used 7𝑥 + 1 as a mathematical statement to describe
the total number of apples sold for the week. If she sold 50 apples on Monday, how many
apples did she sell after a week?
A. 351 B. 381 C.391 D. 401
3. What terms can be combined in adding polynomials?
A. Different B. Dissimilar C. Similar D. Monomial
4. Find the result when you subtract ( 3a -4a +4 ) by (2a + a - 8) .
2 2
Key to Corrections
ACTIVITY 1
A.
1. B
Solution:
3x – 2y + 4
=3(-2) – 2(-4) + 4
= -6 + 8 + 4
= -6 + 12
=6
2. B
Solution:
8ab + 3 bc -10
= 8(1)(2) + 3(2)(3) – 10
= 16 + 18 – 10
=34 – 10
=24
B.
3. Solution: 4. Solution: 5. Solution:
5x2 + 4xy + z2 y3 + (x2-2z) 4(x+y) + 4x -3z
= 5(3)2 – 4(3)(-2) + (4)2 =(-2)3 + [ (3)2 – 2 (4) = 4[3+(-2)]2 + [4(3) – 3(4)]
= 45 -4 (-6) + 6 = -8 + [9 – 8] = 4[1]2 + [12-12]
=45 +24 +16 = -8 + 1 =4+0
=85 = -7 =4
