LESSON 7

KINETICS OF CURVILINEAR TRANSLATION, DYNAMIC

EQUILIBRIUM

Overview:
In lesson 5, flight of projectile was discussed. This lesson will extend the
discussion on dynamic equilibrium.

Learning Outcome:
At the end of this lesson, the students can solve problems involving
dynamic equilibrium

Materials Needed:
Hand-outs, Chalkboard/chalk, Eraser, Laptop, Projector and PPT
presentation

Duration: 4 hours

Learning Content:
Kinetics of curvilinear translation, dynamic equilibrium

Example No. 1
A rod 4 ft long rotates in a horizontal plane about a vertical axis through its
center. At each end of the rod is fastened a chord 3 ft long. Each chord supports
a weight W. Compute the speed of rotation in rpm to incline each cord at 30 0 with
the vertical.

Solution:
WV2 V2
tan θ = =

V2
tan 300 =
gr

r = 3.5
V2
tan 300 =
32.2(3.5)

V = 8.07 fps

V = rω
8.07 = 3.5 ω
ω = 2.30 rad/sec
ω = 2.30 rad/sec (60 sec/min) (1rev/2𝜋rad
ω = 22 rpm

Example No. 2
In the figure shown, the 20 lb ball is forced to rotate around the smooth inside
𝜋
surface of a conical shell at the rate of one revolution in sec. Assuming that g =
4

32 fps2
A). find the tension in the chord
B). find the force on the conical shell
C). at what speed in rpm will the force on the shell become zero?

Solution:
A). Tension in the chord
r = 4 Sin 300
r =2 ft

ω= = 8 rad/sec
π/4

V = r ω = 2(8) = 16 fps

WV2
T = W Cos 300 + Cos 600
gr

20(16)2
T = 20 Cos 300 + Cos 600
32(2)
T = 57.3 lb

B). Force on the conical shell

WV2 20(16)2
R= Sin 600 – W Sin 300 = Sin 600 – 20 Sin 300
gr 32(2)
R = 59.3 lb

C). Speed so that the force on the shell become zero.

WV2
R= Sin 600 – W Sin 300
gr

20V2
0= Sin 600 – 20 Sin 300
32(2)

V = 6.08 fps

V=rω

37
6.08 = 2 ω

ω = 3.04 rad/sec

3.04(60)
ω=
2𝜋rad

ω = 29 rpm

Example No. 3
The hammer of an impact testing machine weighs 64.4 lb as shown in the figure.
It is attached to the end of a light rod 4 ft long which is pivoted to a horizontal axis
at A.
A) What is the bearing reaction on the pivot an instant after being released
from the given position?
B) What is the bearing reaction just before impact at B if the velocity of the
hammer is then 5.9 fps?

Solution:
A). Reaction on the pivot after being
released from the given position

T Cos 300 = W
W
T=
Cos 300
64.4
T = Cos 300

T = 74.36 lb

38
B). Reaction on the pivot just before impact at B.

WV2
T1 = W +
gr

64.4(5.9)2
T1 = 64.4 +
32.2(4)
T1 = 81.8 lb

Learning Activity:
Seatwork:
To check the radius of a railroad curve, the effect of a 20 lb weight is observed to
be 20.7 lb on a spring scale suspended from the roof of an experimental car
rounding the curve at 40 mph. What is the radius of the curve?

Ans θ = 14.940
V = 58.67 fps
R = 400.5 ft

Learning Evaluation:
Solve the problem below neatly and correctly.
A weight concentrated at the end of a chord forms a conical pendulum for which
the period is 1 sec. Determine the velocity V of the weight if the chord rotates
inclined at 300 with the vertical.

39
Ans V = 2.96 fps
