Reflections: 1. Why Is Form Essential To Art? How Is Form Expressed or Perceived in Art?

Form is an essential element of art that helps create the illusion of depth and three-dimensionality on a two-dimensional surface. It can refer to the overall shape of a work or the individual shapes within it. The categories of art include literature, visual arts, sculpture, performance, and music. Examples of Philippine artworks provided for each category include novels, paintings, monuments, folk dances, and classical compositions. Everyday objects like mugs, towels, and phone cases can also be considered art forms that make life more enjoyable. Western Visayas is known for singers, actors, painters, and architectural works like mansions and churches that demonstrate the region's rich cultural history. Reflections

1. Why is form essential to art? How is form expressed or perceived in art?

Form is very essential to arts. Form is one of the elements of art, along with the line, shape,
texture, value, space, and color. Form in art helps artists to produce an illusion of 3D and depth on a
two-dimensional surface. In relation to art the term form has two meanings: it can refer to the overall
form taken by the work its physical nature or within a work of art . It can refer to the element of shape
among the various elements that make up a work. Until the emergence of modern art, when colour
became its rival, form was the most important element in painting and was based above all on the
human body. In treating or creating form in art the artist aims to modify natural appearances in order to
make a new form that look dramatic that conveys sensation, feeling, emotions or meaning in itself. In
modern art the idea grew that form could be expressive even if largely or completely separated from
appearances.

2. What are the categories of art? Provide examples of Philippine art works in each category.

The categories of arts are

1. Literature

2. Visual (Painting/drawing)

3. Sculpture (anything in 3 dimensions, including architecture, statuary, interior design, or automotive

styling to an extent),

4. Performance (acting, dance, gymnastics, or anything involving movement of physical forms, like
automated mechanisms).

5. “Music” (Anything using audio, which could be extended to storytelling or public speaking, though this
bleeds over into performance).

Provide examples of Philippine art works in each category.

1. literature - Noli Me Tángere by Dr. José Rizal. ...

Florante at Laura by Francisco Balagtas.

Mga Ibong Mandaragit by Amado V. Hernandez. ...

Banaag at Sikat by Lope K. Santos

Dekada '70 by Lualhati Bautista.

2. Visual (Painting/drawing) -

Vicente Manansala (1981) This style is exemplified in his works Kalabaw, Mother and Child,
Madonna of the Slums, and Still Life with Green Guitar.

3. Sculpture –

Guillermo Tolentino (1973) His masterpiece, the Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan, Oblation,
now an iconic symbol of the University of the Philippines,

4. Performance

Popular with Filipinos is folk dancing. There are many variations of dances, both ceremonial and
traditional, that are performed for many different occasions. One of the oldest Filipino dances, the
singkil is a noble and difficult dance that is based upon a legend of the Maranao people of Mindanao.

5. “Music”

Art music forms in Philippine music consist of locally composed works that have used standard
formats of Western music.

Example: The first group of art music composers include Juan Hernandez, Nicanor
Abelardo, Francisco Buencamino and Antoni Molina. Some of these major works are
Abelardo’s Piano Concerto of 1923, Santiago’s “Tagailog“Symphony, Molina’s
“Batingaw” “Choral Symphony“, “Mayon“, “Piano Concerto” by Francisco Buencamino.

he following generation of composers consists of Antonio Buenaventura who composed

the famous tone poems By the Hillside and Youth and Hilarion Rubio who wrote “Pilipinas
Kong Mahal” Symphonic Overtureand Symphony for Greatness. Rodolfo Cornejo, who is
also highly proficient on the keyboard, composedSymphony– “The Allies” and
“Dedication” Symphony. Ramon Tapales, a violinist of note, contributed some major works
like Philippine Suite and Ave Liberator to honor the liberation of the Philippines at the end of
the 2nd World War. Another contemporary Lucino Sacramento wrote the highly romantic twin
piano concertos “Maharlika” and “Bituin“.
3. Identify examples of art forms which you encounter in everyday life. How are these art forms
relevant to you?

Art is a natural part of our world. Find art in the everyday world—calendars, book illustrations,
paintings in the home, murals in libraries, elements in architecture, design of ornamental gardens,
monuments, and sculptures. Play a game when traveling in which your child searches for artworks in the
environment. If you don’t have any of these things adorning your walls, don’t panic, you’d be surprised
at how much art you actually have in your home or in surroundings if you look around!

Art is not purely for looking at and admiring, a lot of it is functional too. Everything from a
delightfully patterned sheet on the bed, decorative flowered towels or that cute red heart covered mug
to the sleek cellphone case you have can be considered a form of art.

While art may not be vital to fulfill our basic needs, it does make life joyful and art is valuable.

4. Research on artworks produced in your region. What are the distinctive characteristics of
contemporary art in your region?

Western Visayas is an administrative region in the Philippines. Each province's consisting

Western Visayas are rich in cultural and historical past; famous old houses or ruins ,famous works of
arts, and singers and artist and festivals…For example Singers: Jose Marie Chan, Jed Madela, in ACTING,
Susan Roces and Alan K. in Literary , Graciano Lopez Jeana, Magdalena Jalondi and Doreen Fernandez. In
Paintings - Cristina Sollesta Taniguchi is a champion of feminine aesthetic. Charlie Co is a Filipino Asian
Modern & Contemporary painter, Dennis Ascalon is a Black artist in Asia. And Hersely-Ven D. Casero is
Dumaguete’s most successful and fast-rising visual artist to date. Architerural works in the Region-
Mansions, Churches and Ruins like Nelly's Garden and Ledesma Mansion.
5. Name one artist featured in the discussion. What made his/her body of work “contemporary”?
What significant influences define his or her works?

For me its Jose Marie Chan – as an Ilonggo songwriter, composer and singer. From the moment
he sung into a microphone, HE was destined to become the official voice of Christmas. His voice is clean
and warm like your favorite holiday sweater. It glitters like December lights. It’s hopeful and ageless like
the holidays. That he produced the biggest Christmas hit of all time at the height of FM radio, ensuring
value of a Filipino Christmas wherever we are in malls, houses, taxi cabs, and jeepneys or in other
countries for generations to come, is a modern day Christmas miracle to every Filpino.

One of the song that Jose Marie Chan I love most is the “Christmas in Our Hearts” it became the
new magic every year, every christmas. It allowed us to feel like little kids again because the innocence
of the song belonged in the here and now. He Let us remember that Christmas is the second most
important part of our Christian Faith That God sent His only Son to be born as human, like us in all
things, in order to bring God’s Message of love to us. In “Christmas In Our Hearts,” we sing “Let love, like
that starlight on that first Christmas morn, lead us back to the manger where Christ the Child was born.”
Love is at the center of Christmas. The love that Jesus taught us. The love of God above all things and
and loving our neighbors, especially the poor among us.
