Our God of Promise - Part 1

https://www.intouch.org/listen/radio/our-god-of-promise-part-1
Our entire Christian life is built on promises, including those for eternal life and
resurrection. These promises are either unconditional or conditional. God will
fulfill certain promises regardless of the circumstances. Other times, He will do
something only if we meet certain conditions.
Dr. Stanley explains why we know God will keep His promises—because He is
truthful, faithful, immutable, and loving. Also, we can trust in His ability to
keep those promises because our Lord is:
Omniscient: God knows everything about every decision we need to make. He
knows what came before and what comes after. His promises to us are based
on complete knowledge, so He doesn’t make mistakes. Hebrews 4, 13 “And
before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of
the one to whom we must render an account.”
Omnipresent: God is always with us no matter what’s going on in our lives.  He
promises to never leave nor forsake us. Psalm 139, The inescapable God.

O Lord, you have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit down and
when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my
path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a
word is on my tongue, O Lord, you now it completely. 5 You hem me in, behind
and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for
me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.
Omnipotent: El Shaddai is the Hebrew name for God that means “God
Almighty.” He is always in control whether we understand what He is doing or
not. Nothing is too difficult for Him. Psalm 103, 19 The LORD has established his
throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.
The only reasons a conditional promise might not be fulfilled is because our
requests aren’t in the will of God or sin has gotten in the way. For these
promises, God only requires two things from us: obedience and faith. If we
follow the Lord and trust Him to keep His word, we will experience the great
blessings of His fulfilled promises.
Promises are valuable: marriage, contracts, relationships, memberships etc.
Hebrews 10, A Call to Persevere
19
Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the
blood of Jesus,
20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is,
through his flesh),
21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
22 let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts
sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure
water.
23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who
has promised is faithful.
24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds,
25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging
one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Words binding a person to do something.
Divine promise is God has promised to do or not do.
Unconditional and conditional.
Character and ability.
Unconditional promise:
Genesis 12, The Call of Abram
1
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and
your father’s house to the land that I will show you.
2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name
great, so that you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and
in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Conditional promise:
Romans 10,

because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your
heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with
the mouth and so is saved.
1. God is truthful: He is the essence of truth, he knows the truth about
everything, there is nothing hidden from Him. He has never broken a
promise He has never forgotten one either.

2. God is faithful: trustworthy, 1 Corinthians 10, 13 No testing has overtaken

you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you
be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the
way out so that you may be able to endure it. God has the character to fulfill
His promises. Most of times we don’t trust Him to deliver on them, so we
waver. 1 Corinthians 1, 9 God is faithful; by him you were called
into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
3. God is immutable: Malachi 3, 6 For I the LORD do not change; therefore, you,
O children of Jacob, have not perished. 7 Ever since the days of your
ancestors you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them.
Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say,
“How shall we return?” He never changes his mind, He does not learn
anything, He does not get angry, He does

4. God is a God of love: The cross! Hebrews 13, 5 Keep your lives free from the
love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, “I will
never leave you or forsake you. 1 John 4, God Is Love. 7 Beloved, let us love
one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God
and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is
love. 9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son
into the world so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that
we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning
sacrifice for our sins. 11 Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought
to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God
lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.

5. Omniscient: God knows everything about every decision we need to make.

He knows what came before and what comes after. His promises to us are
based on complete knowledge, so He doesn’t make mistakes. Hebrews 4,
13 “
And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to
the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account.” Complete
knowledge. So, He knows what is best all the time.

6. Omnipresent: God is always with us no matter what’s going on in our lives.

He promises to never leave nor forsake us. Psalm 139, The inescapable God.

O Lord, you have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit down
and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out
my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even
before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you now it completely. 5 You hem me
in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too
wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. He is always there for
you and me. I will be with you to the end of this age.

7. Omnipotent: El Shaddai is the Hebrew name for God that means “God
Almighty.” He is always in control whether we understand what He is doing
or not. Nothing is too difficult for Him. Psalm 103, 19 The LORD has
established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.
Genesis 17, The Sign of the Covenant . When Abram was ninety-nine years
old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk
before me, and be blameless. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and
you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.” 3 Then Abram fell on his
face; and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You
shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer shall your name
be Abram,[b] but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the
ancestor of a multitude of nations.
Jeremiah 2,
REQUIREMENTS:
Obey, Exodus 15, 26 He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of
the Lord your God, and do what is right in his sight, and give heed to his
commandments and keep all his statutes, I will not bring upon you any of the
diseases that I brought upon the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”
If you do this, I well do this. Conditional promises. I have a part to play in it.
Deuteronomy 28, Blessings for Obedience, 1 If you will only obey the Lord your
God, by diligently observing all his commandments that I am commanding you
today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the
earth; 2 all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey
the Lord your God:

Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field.

Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your ground, and the fruit
of your livestock, both the increase of your cattle and the issue of your flock.

Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go
out.
Faith, trusting Him all the time.
Claim it, we must do, without a doubt.
Peace, Joy, Fulfillment, etc.
New Testament Unconditional Promises
Here are 25 New Testament promises that we can hang on to. These are
unconditional – that means FREE to us. It is God’s responsibility to assure that
they are in place when we need to count on them.
Matthew 11,
28
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I
will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”.”
Matthew 19,
23
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich
person to enter the kingdom of heaven.
24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then
who can be saved?”
26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God
all things are possible.”
Matthew 28, The Commissioning of the Disciples
16
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had
directed them.
17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And
remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Acts 10, Gentiles Hear the Good News
34
Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no
partiality,
35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is
acceptable to him.”
Romans 14,
12
So then, each of us will be accountable to God. ”

Romans 8,
28
We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who
are called according to his purpose.
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the
image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family.
30 And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he
also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.
Philippians 1,

I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will
bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 4,

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.
6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
19
And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in
glory in Christ Jesus.
20 To our God and Father be glory
2 Corinthians 3,
17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
freedom.
18 And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though
reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one
degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit."
Colossians 3,
11
In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and
uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!”
2 Timothy 2,
11
The saying is sure:
If we have died with him, we will also live with him;

if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he will also deny us;
13
if we are faithless, he remains faithful—
for he cannot deny himself.”
2 Timothy 2,
19
But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this inscription: “The Lord knows
those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who calls on the name of the Lord turn
away from wickedness.”
Hebrews 13,
8 “
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
James 1, Faith and Wisdom

My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it
nothing but joy,
 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance;
4 and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and
complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1,
17
Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming
down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due
to change.
18 In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so
that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.”
1 Peter 3,
22
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels,
authorities, and powers made subject to him.”
2 Peter 3,

But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a
thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.
9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is
patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.”
Revelation 1,

Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who
pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail.
So it is to be. Amen.”
Revelation 17,
14 “
I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These
are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."
Revelation 20, Satan’s Doom
7 “
When the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison
8 and will come out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog
and Magog, in order to gather them for battle; they are as numerous as the
sands of the sea.
9 They marched up over the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of
the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from heaven and
consumed them.
10 And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and
sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented
day and night forever and ever.”
Revelation 21,
27
But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or
falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Revelation 22,

Nothing accursed will be found there anymore. But the throne of God and of
the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him;
4 they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.  5 And there
will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will
be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
God's Precious Promises 1
https://www.intouch.org/listen/radio/gods-precious-promises-part-1

What would you think about a person who was very wealthy but always
complained about not having enough? Many Christians have the same attitude.
They are spiritually wealthy, but don’t act like it and often choose to live as
paupers.
Unfortunately, many believers don’t understand their true wealth. In this
message, Dr. Stanley shares over 20 rich promises we should remember about
our faith including:
1. Our reconciliation to God through the death of Christ.
2. God’s continued presence in our lives.
3. His promise to answer our prayers.
4. His promise to never withhold good things from us.
5. Our fruitfulness in old age.
6. God’s help in time of trouble.
7. Our eternal security.
8. The promise of heaven as our home.
God’s promises are precious and magnificent because He is the one who made
them. He is the God who has the power and ability to keep them, and He never
changes. Commit these promises to your heart and trust your Heavenly Father
to keep every last one.
2 Peter 1, Salutation
1
Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have received a faith as precious as ours through the
righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

May grace and peace be yours in abundance in the knowledge of
God and of Jesus our Lord.
The Christian’s Call and Election

His divine power has given us everything needed for life and

godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by   his own

glory and goodness.
4 Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very
great promises, so that through them you may escape from the
corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become
participants of the divine nature.
5 For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with
goodness, and goodness with knowledge,
6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and
endurance with godliness,
7 and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love.
8 For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you
from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 For anyone who lacks these things is short-sighted and blind, and is forgetful
of the cleansing of past sins.
10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call
and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble.
11 For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ will be richly provided for you.
Why should we believe that God´s promises are precious and very great
promises?

1. The promise that God made me part of His family, a brother to

Christ:
Romans 5,

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a
good person someone might actually dare to die.

8 But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners
Christ died for us.
9 Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his
blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God .
10 For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through
the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled,
will we be saved by his life.
11 But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation .
I NOW HAVE A HERITAGE FROM GOD!

2. The promise that I am clean of sin because God is faithful :

1 John 1, God Is Light

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is
light and in him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness,
we lie and do not do what is true;
7 but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship
with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in
us.

9 If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us
our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness .
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in
us.

3. The promise that God is our traveling companion in this

pilgrimage, His presence in my life is permanent forever :
Hebrews 13,

Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with
what you have; for he has said, “I will never leave you or forsake
you.”
I CAN WALK WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT ALWAYS

4. The promise that we don’t have to live our lives on our own :
John 14, The Promise of the Holy Spirit
15
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another
Advocate,  to be with you forever.
17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither
sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he
will be in you.
AGAIN THE HOLY SPIRIT IS RESIDENT IN MY INSIDE FOREVER

5. The promise of God strength in my life:

Isaiah 41,
1
Listen to me in silence, O coastlands;
    let the peoples renew their strength;
let them approach, then let them speak;
let us together draw near for judgment.

you whom I took from the ends of the earth,
and called from its farthest corners,
saying to you, “You are my servant,
    I have chosen you and not cast you off”;
10
do not fear, for I am with you,
    do not be afraid, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
6. The promise that He will supply all our needs:
Matthew 6, Concerning Prayer

“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they
love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners,
so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have
received their reward.
6 But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and
pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in
secret will reward you.

“When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for
they think that they will be heard because of their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask
him.

7. The promise He will answer all my prayers:

1 John 1, God Is Light

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is
light and in him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness,
we lie and do not do what is true;
7 but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship
with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in
us.
9 If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and
cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in
us.
1 John 5,
14
And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything
according to his will, he hears us.
15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know
that we have obtained the requests made of him.
8. The promise that He will not withhold any good thing from those
that are His children:
Psalm 84,
11
For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
    he bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does the  Lord  withhold
        from those who walk uprightly.
12
O Lord of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you.

9. The promise that He will comfort us through the trip .

2 Corinthians 1, Paul’s Thanksgiving after Affliction

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies
and the God of all consolation,
4 who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those
who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are
consoled by God.

5 For just as the sufferings of Christ are abundant for us, so also our
consolation is abundant through Christ.
6 If we are being afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation; if we are
being consoled, it is for your consolation, which you experience when you
patiently endure the same sufferings that we are also suffering.
7 Our hope for you is unshaken; for we know that as you share in our
sufferings, so also you share in our consolation.

10. The promise that no temptation will be bigger than what I can
resist.
1 Corinthians 10,

No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone.

13

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your
strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so
that you may be able to endure it.
11. The promise that He will give us Wisdom:
James 1, Faith and Wisdom

My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it
nothing but joy,
 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance;
4 and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and
complete, lacking in nothing.

If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all
generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you .
6 But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the
sea, driven and tossed by the wind;
7, 8 for the doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way, must not
expect to receive anything from the Lord.

12. The promise that He will give us rest:

Matthew 11,
28
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy
burdens, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls .
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light .”

13. The promise that He will give us peace:

Philippians 4,

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.

6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and

supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will
guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus .
14. The promise that He will make us strong and fruitful in old age :
Psalm 92,
12
The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in
Lebanon.
13
They are planted in the house of the  Lord;
they flourish in the courts of our God.
14
In old age they still produce fruit;
they are always green and full of sap,
showing that the  Lord  is upright;
15

he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him .

15. The promise that He will give us the desires of my heart :
Psalm 37,
12
The righteous flourish like the palm tree,
and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13
They are planted in the house of the Lord;
they flourish in the courts of our God.
14
In old age they still produce fruit;
they are always green and full of sap,
15
showing that the Lord is upright;
he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

16. The promise that He will give us protection when in trouble :

Psalm 46,

God is our refuge and strength, a very present   help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
    though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;

though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

17. The promise that he will give us directions for my life :

Psalm 32,

I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle,
else it will not stay near you.

18. The promise that He will give us unconditional love :

Romans 8,
37
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved
us.

38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers ,
39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be
able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord .
NOBODY CAN SEPARTE ME FROM HIM
19. The promise that He is a good shepherd to guide us always and
that I am eternally secured:
John 10,
11
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees
the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches
them and scatters them.
13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep.
14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,
15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life
for the sheep.
16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also,
and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to
take it up again.
18 No one takes[a] it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power
to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this
command from my Father.”

20. The promise of heaven, an eternal House:

John 14, Jesus the Way to the Father
1
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were

not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you ?

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will
take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also .
4 And you know the way to the place where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we
know the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to
the Father except through me.
7 If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him
and have seen him.”
