Pre-lesson
1. Present the new vocabulary through miming. Pretend you are setting the table and invite pupils to
guess what you are doing. Introduce the expression set the table. Pupils repeat and mime the actions
after you. Repeat the same procedure with the phrases clear the table, take out the rubbish, rake
leaves, shovel snow, and feed the fish. (HOTS)
Lesson delivery
2. Ask a question for general understanding, e.g. Which child is most like you?
3. Have pupils look at the presentation and ask them what kind of text this is (an article) and where they
would find a page like this one (in a magazine).
4. Pupils look at the pictures and guess what housework the children have to do at home. Have pupils read
ACTIVITIES and listen (Track 25) to the text.
5. Ask pupils to find and guess the meaning of unfamiliar words in the text.
6. Play the CD and have pupils follow along silently. Play the CD a second time and encourage pupils to
shadow read.
7. Ask pupils questions such as the following: What jobs does Beth do at home? When does she take out
the rubbish? Who does Wadida help at home? What housework does she do? What does Mark have to
do in the winter?
8. Pupils read again and complete activity 2.
Post-lesson
9. TASK 10: WHAT ABOUT YOU? Invite some pupils to tell you by asking: „What about you? What can you
remember?‟ Write their answers on the board.

2. Have pupils list the jobs they do at home and talk to a partner about their list. (21 st CA)
3. Use a pre-prepared paragraph as a model to draw attention to features of punctuation.
Pupils insert the punctuation (on a separate worksheet prepared before the lesson).
4. Ask pupils to write about what they have to do at home in their exercise book.

2. Pupils reread text about Edinburgh on p.19. Write on board: A. What the writer likes about the
city. B. Other places and transport in the city. C. Where the city is. Pupils match the phrases A–C to
the paragraphs in the text (1.C; 2.A; 3.B).
3. Pupils do Activity 5 (Use it!). Explain they‟re going to write a plan for a website with a
ACTIVITIES description of a town or city they like. Read steps in Writing Guide aloud. Remind pupils about
order of paragraphs. Elicit ideas about how to describe the size of a place. (HOTS)
4. Pupils look at Writing Guide, B Think and Plan. They make notes about the place they like.
Monitor pupils as they write these.
5. Pupils write the description then read it to check they have points in B, C and D of Writing
Guide. They draw smiley faces for writing the 5 points in B; three paragraphs in C; „there‟s‟ and
„there are‟; adjectives in the right place and comparative forms in D. (CBA)
