5 Redundancy Reliability Factor

The document discusses reliability/redundancy factor, which is used to increase the seismic design capacity of structures that resist a large percentage of loads with few elements. It has a formula that considers vertical/horizontal earthquake components, ground floor area, and maximum element-story shear ratio. An example applies the factor to a special moment resisting frame, calculating the factor and showing it is below the limit. The factor ensures redundancy is incorporated during schematic design of moment frames.

RELIABILITY / REDUNDANCY FACTOR

What is Reliability/Redundancy Factor?

- Redundancy is a characteristic of structures in which multiple paths of resistance to loads are
provided.
- The advantage of structure that incorporates redundancy makes it less susceptible to problems
caused by design and construction.
- A structure with redundancy performs much better during earthquakes.
- Redundancy Factor was developed to increase the seismic design capacity for structures, in which a
large percentage of the total later load is resisted by a small number of elements.

FOR SCHEMATIC DESIGN

WE APPLY REDUNDANCY DURING SCHEMATIC DESIGN PHASE BY

USING THE 1.25 LIMIT AS STATED IN UBC 1997 WHEN
CONSIDERING A MOMENT RESISTING FRAME.

THIS WOULD ENSURE THAT DURING SCHEMATIC PHASE

REDUNDANCY IS INCORPORATED IN THE CONCEPTUALIZATION
FOR THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN.
