Problem Tree Analysis Workshop

Problem tree analysis helps in establishing a realistic overview and awareness of the problem by identifying the
fundamental causes and their most important effects.

The main output of the exercise is a tree-shaped diagram in which the trunk
represents the focal problem, the roots represent its causes and the branches its
effects. Such a problem tree diagram creates a logical hierarchy of causes and
effects and visualizes the links between them. It creates a summary picture of the
existing negative situation.

The problem hierarchy is formed following these six main steps:

1. Define the core problem (focal problem or central point of the overall
problem) to be reflected as the trunk. For this exercise the core problem all 4
groups will be analyzing in on “Illegal Drug Addiction and Abuse”

2. Formulate the causes to be reflected as the roots, of the core problem by


asking the question, “Why does Illegal Drug Addiction and Abuse exist?” and for every identified cause, ask
the question “why does this cause exist?” until you are able to identify the root cause.

3. Formulate the effects (consequences) to be reflected as the branches, of the core problem by asking the
question, “What are the consequences/impact of Illegal Drug Use and Abuse?” and for every indentified
effect, ask the question, “What are the corresponding/succeeding consequences/impact?”

4. You may identify as many causes and effects that you can identify which relates to the core problem.

5. Reflect your answers in a diagram (problem tree) that represents cause-effect relationships (problem
hierarchy)

6. Review the logic and verify the diagram as a whole with regard to validity and completeness. If necessary,
make adjustments. Question to ask for each problem: are these causes sufficient to explain why this occurs?

1. Identify your group assignments through the tables below. Students’ name in bold are the main facilitators
of the group who will ensure that the workshop is done accordingly and preparations have been made for
the presentation of Problem Trees during the Sync Session.

2. Each group has a prepared Problem Tree Workshop Sheet which will be used to reflect your answers and in
the presentation of outputs during the sync session. Note that ONLY the main facilitator has been granted
access to the links, the main facilitator may share it to his/her group members only.

For the MAIN FACILITATORS, kindly check your emails for the links and let me know if you have not received
them by sending in your active gmail account to [email protected].

3. After coming up with the problem trees, make sure to facilitate a group discussion with the following
questions as guide and reflect the common discussion points and observations in the second slide.

 Does the problem tree represent the reality? Are the economic, political and socio-cultural
dimensions to the problem considered?
 Which causes and consequences are getting better, which are getting worse and which are
staying the same?
 What are the most serious consequences? Which are of most concern and why?
 Which causes are easiest / most difficult to address? What possible solutions or options might
there be? Where could a policy change help address a cause or consequence, or create a
solution?

4. Take a recording and group photo while doing the group discussion and save all recordings and photos in
your section’s assigned folder found in this link below:

5. Assign a reporter/presenter and prepare for group reporting and discussion during the sync session. For
