4.3 Mix Desgin For M40 Grade STEP-1:-Target Strength of Mixed Proportion

The document provides steps to design a concrete mix for M40 grade concrete using traditional cement as well as geopolymer concrete with a fly ash to GGBS ratio of 50:50. For traditional concrete, the mix design results in 532 kg/m3 of cement, 587 kg/m3 of fine aggregate, 1117 kg/m3 of coarse aggregate, and 191.58 kg/m3 of water. For geopolymer concrete, the mix contains 266.085 kg/m3 each of fly ash and GGBS, 597 kg/m3 of fine aggregate, 1140 kg/m3 of coarse aggregate, and 191.58 kg/m3 of water and sodium hydroxide

3 MIX DESGIN FOR M40 GRADE

STEP-1:- Target strength of mixed proportion
f’ck = fck +1.65S
f’ck = target mean compressive strength at 28 days in N/mm2
fck = characteristic compressive strength at 28 days in N/mm2
S = standard deviation, in N/mm2
[From table 2 of IS 10262-2019 value of S for grade M40 is]
f’ck = 40 + (1.65 × 5)
f’ck = 48.25 N/mm2

STEP-2:- Selection of water-cement ratio

Let us assume the exposure of concrete to air is moderate IS 456-2000 for grade M40.
Maximum water-cement ratio we can adopt from IS 10262-2019 (Page no. 4) is
Hence let us assume water-cement ratio as 0.36 > 0.45 (Hence, O.K.)

STEP-3:- Calculation of water and cement content

Water content
From IS 10262-2019 for 20mm aggregate size the water content required is 186 liters from
Table 4 for slump value of 50mm.
Let us assume that we need the slump value of 75mm then, from IS 10262-2019 CL.6.2.4 the
required water content may be increased or decreased by adding about 3 percent for each
increase or decrease of 25 mm slump i.e.,
3
Water content required of 75mm slump = 186 + x 186
100
= 191.58 kg
Cement content
As we know the values of water content and water–cement ratio then the cement content is
water content
water −cement ratio=
cement content
water content
cement content =
water −cement ratio
191.58
cement content =
0.36
∴ cement content=532.17 kg/m3
STEP-4:- Proportion of volume of course and fine aggregates
From Table 3 of IS 10262-2019, volume of course aggregates corresponding to 20mm size of
aggregates and fine aggregates of Zone-II is 0.62 (for water- cement ratio of 0.50).
As our water-cement ratio is of 0.36, from CL.5.5.1 from IS 10262-2019 the proportion of
volume of course aggregate is increased at the rate of 0.01 for every decrease in water-cement
ratio by 0.05
∴ corrected value for course aggregate is=¿0.62+0.028 = 0.648
volume of fine aggregate is=¿ .648)
∴ volume of fine aggregate is = 0.352

STEP-5:-Mix calculations (for 1m3 of volume)

Volume of entrapped air in the concrete is 1% of the total volume of concrete [from IS
10262-2019 table 3]
i.e., 0.01m3
