Interacting & Noninteracting Systems

This document is a lecture on interacting and non-interacting systems given by Mr. K Samba Siva Rao at SNS College of Technology. It defines non-interacting systems as those where changes in one system do not affect another connected system, and interacting systems as those where changes in one system can affect another connected system. Examples are given of a non-interacting system of two tanks connected by a restriction, and an interacting system of two tanks where the outflow of one feeds into the other. The lecture concludes with a summary of interacting versus non-interacting systems.

Interacting & Non-interacting Systems
• The simple liquid level, temperature and pressure
processes are basically first order systems.
• In practice, the physical systems encountered are
a combination of many such first order systems.
• Based on how two or more systems are
connected, the systems are classified as:
– Non Interacting systems
– Interacting systems

Non-interacting Systems

• In the above system, the output flow from Tank1 (q1) is the input to
Tank2 through a restriction R1.
• The above system is called non interacting because any change in
outflow of Tank2 (q2) or level of Tank2 (h2) does not affect the level
of tank1 (h1) or outflow of Tank1 (q1).
• In the above system, the flow through restriction R1 depends only on
h1.
