Abstract

In today’s world, both renewable and non-renewable sources of energy are used to
generate electricity but still, our demand is not fulfilled. Therefore electricity generation
through different methods is required. This project deals with power generation using a
jump box. The traditional jump box is replaced to generate electricity with the help of
some mechanism. When one jumps over this jump box’s top plate it displaces downward
and the rack and pinion mechanism activates and generated electricity can be stored in a
battery. Every day millions of people do exercise in parks, gyms, and different places.
Utilizing the human body’s energy which is released during exercise is relevant for any
nation. This paper tells about power generation using gravity. This is a less investment
project which can easily fulfill the power demand of a park.

Keywords: Non-Renewable energy source, Dynamo, rack and pinion arrangement, guided pipes, Jump
box

Introduction
A jump box is a commonly used equipment used in doing physical exercise which keeps our
lower body fit. In general, the dimensions of the jump box are 20*24*30 inches. Fossil fuel
consumption is increasing day by day, which increases our concern about different ways of
power generation. We aim to utilize human energy to obtain maximum energy; otherwise, it
would have gone waste. Power generation using this method doesn’t harm the environment.
Gravity is going to be the energy source for electricity generation. [1]

Working Principle

The body weight of the person who is using this equipment is used as a medium for power
generation. When the person jumps on this equipment because of gravity the upper surface of
this equipment moves downwards to a certain specified distance which rotates the rack and

pinion arrangement and this arrangement rotates the shaft of the dynamo and electricity is
generated.

Components

A) Base Plate

It plays a simple and most important role in supporting the entire assembly. It has two pipes for
supporting the spring and for angles for avoiding top plate collision with the bottom plate. It is
shown in fig. 1

Fig. 1 Base Plate

B) Top Plate

This is the uppermost and important part of this mechanism on which the person jumps. It is
similar to the base plate with guidance pipes and angles. It is shown in fig.2

2

C) Springs

Its main function is to provide repulsive force after the person jumps over the jump box. It
restores the top plate of the jump box to its initial position. In this mechanism, we have used 2
similar springs. It is shown in fig.3

Fig 3. Spring

D) Rack and Pinion

Rack & pinion is a type of gear arrangement that transmits power from vertical motion to
rotatory motion. This is the most important component of this mechanism because it transmits
power from the top plate to the generator. To increase the number of rotations, it is coupled with
spur gear (idle). It is shown in fig 4.

D) Generator

It is an essential component used to convert Mechanical energy into electrical energy.

E) Side plates

Once all the components are assembled, the mechanism will be packed by side plates

Design and Assembly

The parts which are listed above are assembled from the bottom to the up approach. The lower
part is the base plate. After that springs are fitted around the pipes present in the base plate.
Springs are used to provide the Repulsive force in an upward direction which places the top plate
in its original position after displacement. Pipes are used for the proper fitting of springs. The top
plate is assembled then and fitted into the springs with support from guidance pipes. The rack
and pinion arrangement is fitted to the top plate at its center so that it can absorb the maximum
force. The assembly is shown in different views given below.

Calculations for the Power

Let us consider the mass of person to be 60Kg

Height displaced =10cm

Work done=Force*distance

Here,

Force=Weight of the body

= 60 kg * 9.81

= 588.6 N

Distance travelled by the body= Height displaced

= 10 cm

Output power =Work done/sec

6
= (588.6*0.10)/60

=0.981 Newton (for one pushing force)

Power developed for 60 minutes = 58.86 watts

Power developed for 24 Hours (1 day) = 58.86*24

= 1412.64 watts

Conclusion

Electricity has become the most important part of our life. Electricity demand is increasing day
by day and power generation using jump box can help a lot. The aim of this project is very basic
and simple to generate electricity using the human body and save our non-renewable sources.
Power generation using this method doesn’t harm the environment. The energy released by the
human body is utilized using this system
