1.0 SUB-STRUCTURE WORK

1.1 Objective

To provide work instructions works for domestic water tank plinth and pump house.

1.2 Scope

a. To erect foundation pad footing and stump.

b. To erect ground floor to roof floor columns.

c. To erect ground floor beam and roof beam.

d. To erect ground floor slab and roof slab.

e. To erect domestic water tank plinth.

1.3 Materials

a. Formwork: Conventional Timber Formwork System

b. Rebar

c. Concrete

1.4 Handling and Storage of Materials

a. Formwork: Transport timber formwork from storage yard to the required location
by backhoes or lorry. Use crane and manpower to erect and dismantle the forms.
Stack and arrange forms at the storage yard.

b. Rebar: Transport rebar from storage yard to the required location by backhoes or
lorry. Use crane and manpower to erect the rebar.

c. Concrete: Transport concrete batched at the nearest ready-mix plant by concrete


mixing truck.

1.6 Preparatory Works

a. Submit relevant documentation to the client approval before entering the site.

1.7 Work Methodology

Excavation

a. The backhoe/excavator should be checked for its validity and overall condition of
the machinery is inspected. The Operator is checked for his valid operating
license.

b. The excavation level to be properly determined from the approved drawings prior
to commencement of excavation works.

c. The sides of the excavation pits shall be adequately supported at all times to
prevent erosion and suitably battered.

d. All excavated materials from the excavation required for refilling shall be stock
piled at suitable location while all excavated materials from the excavation not
required for refilling shall be disposed from site.

e. Extreme care should be observed to prevent any obstacles to access movement of


manpower / materials.

f. The excavated pits shall be confined with proper barricades / signage when no
work is in progress.

Placement of Hardcore

a. The base of the excavated pits shall be placed with hardcore and compacted as
shown in the approved drawings.

Lean Concrete Placement

a. The top of the hardcore shall be laid with blinding (lean) concrete as shown in the
approved drawings.

b. Upon placing of lean concrete, no trimming of the side face to be carried out to
prevent mixture of foreign materials.

Back Filling & Earth Levelling

a. The backhoe/Excavator should be checked for its validity and its overall
condition. The Operator is checked for his valid operating license.

b. The back filling level to be properly determined from the approved drawings
prior to commencement of back filling works.

c. All back filling materials from the excavation required for refilling shall be of a
suitable material stock piled previously.

d. Extreme care should be observed to prevent any obstacles to access movement of


manpower / materials.

e. Finishing levelling shall be done by manpower only.

Scaffolding Work

a. All works above the height of 2.0 meter must be carried out only after scaffolding
(complete with all necessary fittings / supports / platforms / anchorages /
outriggers / ladders) in good / safe condition be erected under the supervision of
competent person.

b. The scaffolding shall also be used to temporarily support the concreting of beams
/ slabs.

Fabrication and Placement of Formwork

a. All formwork fabrication shall be constructed of timber and shall be fabricated to


the required sizes based on the approved Construction Drawings.

b. The formworks shall be placed and firmly supported, adequately strutted, braced
and tied to withstand the placing and vibrating of concrete and the weather
effects.

Fabrication and Placement of Steel Reinforcement

a. All steel rebars shall be fabricated to the required sizes and bent in accordance to
the measurements based on the construction drawings approved.

b. The bending shall be done cold with the use of proper bending machine /
technique.

c. All reinforcement rebars are secured and accurately fixed in position using
suitable spacer blocks or chairs. The intersection of rebars shall be secured with
soft iron wire with the ends turned into the body of the concrete.

Placement of Concrete

a. Only concrete batched at the nearest ready-mix plant to the approved grade as
mentioned in the construction drawings shall be permitted to be used.

b. The concrete shall be deposited as near as possible by means of mobile crane to
its final position.

c. Crane should be checked for its validity and its overall condition. The Operator is
checked for his valid operating license.

d. Before moving the crane, check clearance of the area. Check and verify the crane
condition including its boom. Ensure safety of access for the crane to move.
Move the crane and position so that there is sufficient area for the crane to move
and swing its boom while working.

e. Ensure the platform where the crane is parked / stand is firm. The outrigger of the
crane should be stretched to the required limit only and the base of the outrigger
is to sit on timber cushions and or steel plates.

f. Concreting shall be carried out at such a rate that the concrete is at all times
plastic and flows readily into the spaces between the reinforcement bars by
means of the vibration poker to prevent the occurrence of honeycomb.

g. Necessary chute in the formwork shall be provided to avoid segregation of the


concrete or displacement of the reinforcement or formwork.

h. Proper period / method of curing of concrete to be observed.

Removal of Formwork

a. Formwork shall be removed without resorting to hammering or levering against


the surface of the concrete and in a manner that the structure is capable of
carrying its own weight upon removal of all its retention or supporting props.
