Lesson 6 Moment of Inertia

This document discusses calculating the moment of inertia of plane areas and solids of revolution. It provides formulas for finding the moment of inertia of a plane area (Iλ = ∫ r2 dm or ∫ r2 dA) and solid of revolution (Iλ = ∫ r2 dv) using integration. Examples are given of finding the moment of inertia of areas bounded by curves with respect to different axes and solids generated by revolving those areas about axes. An evaluation section provides additional practice problems for finding moments of inertia.

Lesson 6: MOMENT OF INERTIA OF A PLANE AREA

Objective:
 To determine the moment of inertia of a plane area.

Formula:
I ƛ = ∫ r 2 dm
I ƛ = ∫ r 2 dA
Where r is the distance from a particle of mass m of a fixed distance ƛ
Example:

 Find the moment of inertia of the first-quadrant area bounded by

y =9 x and x= 4 with respect to the x-axis.
2

Solution: Y (4, 6) 2
y =9 x
6

Ix= ∫ y 2 ( 4−x)dy x 4-x

 Find the moment of inertia of the area bounded by 2x+y= 6, x= 0 and

y= 0 with respect to the x-axis.
Solution: Y

 Find the moment of inertia of the area bounded by y 2=8 x , y= 2x with

respect to the x-axis.

Solution: xr - xL y= 2x

Find the moment of inertia of the area bounded by the given curves with respect to the
specified axis.

2. y3 = x , x = 8 , y = 0 ; with respect to y = 0

3. y2 = x , x = 0 , y = 4 ;with respect to the y-axis

4. x = 2 √ y , x = 6 , y = 4 ; with respect to x = 0

5. y2 = 8x , x = 0 , y = 4 ; with respect to y = 4
