Demo Teaching Lesson Plan

The lesson plan introduces quadratic functions to grade 8 students. It defines quadratic functions as functions that can be written in the form y=ax^2 + bx + c, where a ≠ 0. It discusses key concepts like the vertex, axis of symmetry, opening direction, intercepts, domain and range. Students will identify quadratic functions, graph parabolas manually and using Geogebra, and expand binomials using Pascal's triangle. The lesson includes mood setting, review, presentation, assessment tasks, and a performance task applying concepts to the students' birthdays.

MOTIVATION//REVIEW:

GAME: “The Boat is Sinking”

Mechanics: The class will be divided into three groups and provide the answer depending on the asked
mathematical problem.
The boat is sinking, group yourselves into:
1. f(x) = x2 + 2x + 3; x=2
2. f(x) = 2x2 + x - 1; x = 4

PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON
A. ABSTRACTION

A quadratic function is a function that can be written in the form of y = ax2 + bx + c, where a, b, and c are real numbers and
a ≠ 0. The highest exponent of the variable is 2, hence it is called a second degree function.

Example 1: Determine whether the following functions is a Quadratic Function or NOT.

1. y = x + 5
2. y = x2 - 2x + 1
3. x + y = 2
4. y = x2
5. y = 3(x - 7)
Answers:
1. NOT
2. Quadratic Function
3. NOT
4. Quadratic Function
5. NOT

There are two types of forms in a quadratic function.

General Form/Standard Form : f(x) = ax2 + bx + c
Vertex Form : f(x) = a(x -h)2 + k

The graph of a quadratic formula is called a Parabola.

Example 2: Put R if the graph represents a Quadratic Function and Q if it does NOT.

Answers:
1. Q
2. R
3. Q
4. Q
5. R

The vertex is the turning point of the parabola. It is also the maximum value if the parabola is opening downward and
minimum value if the parabola is opening upward.
b 4 ac −b 2
The vertex is the point (h,k); where h = − , and k =
2a 4a
The axis of symmetry is a vertical line that divides the parabola into two congruent halves.

Diagram 1.1 Diagram 1.2

The opening of the parabola

If a > 0 (a is positive), then the parabola opens upward (Diagram 1.1)
If a < 0 (a is negative), then the parabola opens downward ( Diagram 1.2)

Intercepts
x - intercept
To find the x-intercepts of an equation, let y = 0 and solve for x.
In a point notation, it is written as (x, 0)
y - intercept
To find the y-intercepts of an equation, let x = 0 and solve for y.
In a point notation, it is written as (y, 0)

The domain of any quadratic function of the set of Real Numbers.

The range of a quadratic is a list of all possible y-values of a quadratic function.

Table of Values
Example 3: Construct the table of values of the given quadratic function y = x 2 + 2x + 1
Solution:
1. Since a > 0 then we know that the graph of parabola opens upward.
b 4 ac −b 2
2. The vertex (− , ) is (1,0)

B. ACTIVITY

 What can you say about the activity?

 Based on the definitions that you have provided what specific topic comes to mind?
Possible Answer: Binomial Theorem

C. ANALYSIS

D. APPLICATION
Teacher: To graph the parabola and see the table of values of the quadratic graph using Geogebra, simply follow the steps
below.
1. Enter the quadratic equation in the
2. Expand (l – y)4 using the Pascal’s Triangle.

3. Evaluate (3 ).
4. Expand (x+3)3 using Pascal’s Triangle.
5. Find the 3rd term of (2x+y)3.

IV. ASSESSMENT TASK

Possible Answers:
1. 16x4 + 24x3 + 36x2 + 24x + 81
2. t5 + 10vt4 + 20v2t3 + 20v3t2 + 10v4t + 32v5
3. 210
4. 20
5. 1,837,080x3
V. PERFORMANCE TASK
Directions: Follow each steps and show your solution.
1. Expand a binomial using your initials. Write your birth month as your first coefficient and the first initial of your
name as the variable. Add or subtract it to the day of birthday together with the first initial of your last name.
Raise it to the last digit of the year you are born. {e.g Ramwill Wryzlie S. Azarcon, 05-06-96, (5r ± 6a) 6 .}
