INNOVATIONS FOR
COMFORT
& CONVENIENCE
AT SPICEJET, we believe that customer experience can always be improved upon. In
keeping with this philosophy, we are constantly looking for ways to make travel not
just a hassle-free experience, but also one that passengers will remember.
Our latest slew of innovations reflects this: a product that rewards travellers who travel
only with hand baggage; another that makes life easier for those who carry heavy
baggage, but not heavy enough to be checked-in; yet another that offers a bigger
choice of meals on board; products to please those who are always on the lookout for
extra legroom, and those who are particular about where they sit on a flight; a prepaid
card that allows passengers to make cashless transactions; an add-on service that
allows the flexibility of cancelling or changing ticket(s) to suit your travel plan; and
finally a product that aims at greater customer ease in case of flight disruptions. No
surprise then that we are the country’s favourite budget airline.

WHITE WATER RAFTING

MID-WAY BETWEEN
MUMBAI AND PUNE
EVERY MONSOON, the sleepy village of Kolad in Raigad district of Maharashtra
comes alive with the voices of white water rafting enthusiasts. They come from all
over, attracted to the nearby Kundalika river which flows from the Sahyadri Hills to
the Arabian Sea. Water released from nearby dams fills up the river and makes it an
ideal spot for rafting, especially when the monsoon is in full cry. The 12 km river
stretch of exciting rapids attracts the experienced as well as amateurs. Once they
have experienced the joys of white water rating on the Kundalika, they keep coming
back for more.

INDIA’S HOTTEST
PEPPER PACKS A REAL
MEAN PUNCH IT IS KNOWN by many names – Ghost Chilli, Naga Jolokia, Ghost Pepper, Red Naga,
U-morok, and the most popular of them all, Bhut Jolokia. Cultivated in four of the
seven north-eastern states, it enjoyed a spot under the sun after being declared the
world’s hottest chilli pepper by the Guinness World Records in 2007. Even now it
ranks seventh among the world’s 10 hottest peppers, with a rating of 1,041,427 SHU
(Scoville Heat Unit), a measure of spiciness. So what do you do with something so
potent? You use it to spice up curries, pickles and chutneys, as well as a remedy for
summer heat. And in some cases, the powers-that-be have also used it as a tear gas.

CAR MUSEUM
■ The Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, under the lead-
ership of the present Maharana of Udaipur, runs the Vintage &
Classic Car Collection. The collection of the cars here are well
maintained. Every week a mechanic comes here and actually
starts the cars and takes them for a small round to make sure they are fit for use. This
has ensured that even though some vehicles are over 70 years old, each one has been
painstakingly restored and works like a charm. All the vehicles displayed here belong
to past rulers of Mewar. The semi-circular motor garage displays the entire collection
of 23 stately and vintage models.

GO BOATING AT PICHOLA LAKE
■ Easily the most beautiful and picturesque lake around, this is
located in the heart of the city. Built by Pichhu Banjara in 1362,
the best way to explore this lake and its sights is to hire a boat.
The pristine lake is set against the backdrop of the lush green
Aravalli hills and thus makes for a sight that is picture-perfect. It
also helps that the azure tones of the water are clean and well-maintained. The lake
itself is surrounded by palaces, temples, bathing ghats and elevated hills. The
beautiful Lake Palace right in the middle of the lake on an island appears like it is
floating on the water. The other important landmark here is Jag Mandir that is
located on another island here.

the involvement of flags and
Bandeira is the Portuguese word
for the flag. Frequent disputes
which occurred between two wards
(section of the village) - Piedade

matters often led to bloody duels,
and sometimes death.
Subsequently, the Portuguese
introduced a system of demarca-

various colours.
The rival groups, however,
knocked down the demarcation
flags sometimes with stones.
Today, in a parody of the past, this
is commemorated with a “Fotash”
flight (toy weapon of bamboo
stem) and berries are used as mis-
siles in a mock fight between rival
groups to knock down an offend-
ing flag. On the day, a carnival
ambience is created. Each ward of
the village has a float at the
parade. Though sponsored by
business houses, the floats have an
unmistakable local favour.

Having taken Lord Shiva’s blessings, I

takes its name from the main formation,
a ring-like rock jutting out at one end.
Many of the surrounding rocks protrude
at weird angles, making for a surreal
sight. The day I went, there was also
some rock climbing and rappelling being
attempted by a bunch of raucous
youngsters. By then, the sun had turned

So, just how difficult was it, looking and

“The film is in chapters. It is the

place where anise works well is with
cured fish and meat. It gives the dish the
perfect balance of taste while effectively
masking that unpleasant aftertaste that

However, anise, and to some extent,
its oriental cousin, star anise, have been
relegated to the background as far as
Indian cooking is concerned. One of the
main reasons for this, according to Chef
Singh, is: “Anise’s use as base in absinthe
and pastis made it more essential for
spirit makers than chefs. As a result, star
anise, which was less sweet, more
pungent, and readily available in Asia,

HOW HEALTHIFYME
HELPED SHWETA LOSE
WEIGHT

TWO YEARS INTO HER CORPORATE JOB, Shweta Mikkili

weighed at 75 kg. Her 7.30 am to 9 pm commute-cum-work
schedule left little scope for exercise; the many pressing
deadlines kept her glued to her office chair. Regular
tracking of her meals and exercise on the HealthifyMe app
helped her reduce to 69 kg in two months. Here is where
she hit a plateau. Her determination of reaching her ideal
size got Shweta to pick an expert to guide her. The first
course of action for Roshini Gilbert, personal coach of
Shweta, was to tweak her diet chart. Lunch comprised a
bowl of salad with rajma or chana, dinner was a simple
roti-sabzi affair. With an emphasis on morning cardio
sessions, Roshini also got Shweta to increase her activity
levels at office. “This meant less of elevators and more of
stairs and it helped accelerate her weight loss,” says
Roshini. In addition to losing weight, Shweta’s
transformation helped her parents as well. “My parents
are diabetic. Since they started eating the healthy meals
I am consuming, their sugar levels have reduced
considerably,” she adds.

A SUCCESS STORY
FROM ODISHA
HIS IS A RAGS-TO-RICHES STORY, a rare one in the state
he hails from, Odisha. Sarat Ku Sahoo had floated Om Oil
and Flour Mills Ltd. in Cuttack in 1976 with just Rs 5,000.
Now he is a leading manufacturer-exporter of quality
spices and vermicelli in India and presides over a Rs 250
crore annual turnover group. Here, in his own words, is the
entrepreneur’s success story in brief:

“When I started off, there were only two other people

with me – my father and a helper. I was an all-in-one –
salesman, accountant and mechanic. We started off by
making Ruchi atta (flour). Quality chaki atta was a new
concept for Orissa consumers. Then we began rolling out
48 new varieties of spices, flour, besan, chuda items,
noodles, vermicelli, etc. Now we have around 300
products, 1,000 employees and 250 wings in all districts of
Orissa. We have also made our presence felt in more than a
dozen other states. My grandfather was into the marketing
business and my father was a hotelier. So entrepreneurship
is in my blood. I want to produce more entrepreneurs like
me who will serve our country. Our company has won
many awards including ‘Spice House Certificate’ of Spices
Board, Government of India (1998); ‘Swaviman Samman’
from Govt. of Odisha (1999); Biju Patnaik Memorial Award
