Science Activity Sheet: (2 Points) (2 Points)

This science activity sheet summarizes a student's experiment on how the size of a glass jar covering a candle affects how long the candle burns. The student hypothesized that a candle covered with a bigger jar would last longer than one covered with a smaller jar, because the bigger jar would contain more oxygen. The results showed that the candle covered with the big jar lasted 107.2 seconds, while the candle covered with the small jar lasted only 20.54 seconds, supporting the hypothesis. The student concluded that the jar keeps oxygen from entering and replenishing, so the candle with more initial oxygen inside the bigger jar lasted longer.

II. DO THIS EXPERIMENT!

Problem: Given two identical sized candles, each one

covered with jar of different size,
which candle lasts longer?

Formulate your hypothesis:

If the candle is closed with a glass jar the oxygen supply is stopped, then a candle covered
with a bigger jar will last longer compared to a candle covered with a small jar.
(2 points)
Now test your hypothesis!

Materials: 2 identical sized candles 2 glass jars of different size stopwatch

Procedures:
1. Prepare 2 identical sized candle and 2 glass jars of different size.
2. Mount each candle on a flat surface and light them using matchstick.
3. Cover each candle with each jar simultaneously. Have someone act as a timekeeper. Ensure
that both candles are covered at the same time.
4. OBSERVE and record the time started and time ended. (4 points)
Set-up Time Started Time Ended
Candle A (covered with small jar) 00:00.00 00:20.54 Seconds
Candle B (covered with big jar) 00:00.00 1:07.20 Seconds

5. Question: Which candle lasts longer, why?

Answer: (3 points)
Putting the jar over the candle keeps oxygen from outside the jar from getting in.
Candle “B” in a larger jar lasts longer because it contains more oxygen. Initially, the candle burns
by making use of the oxygen within the glass and slowly when there is no oxygen the flame goes
off. That is why Candle “A” in a small jar lasts shorter compared to Candle “B” in a big jar.

REMEMBER!

A hypothesis is a tentative answer/solution to a problem.

It has 2 parts: CONDITION (starts with If or when) and
PREDICTION (possible outcome).

A hypothesis can be accepted or rejected. It can be validated through an experiment.

It is important to conduct an experiment to prove that the hypothesis is correct.
