A. Choose the correct options.

1. A place at higher altitude will have cold climate.

2. The area lying between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn is the Torrid Zone.
3. The Temperate Zone is neither too cold nor too hot.
4. The area around the poles is known as Frigid Zone.
5. The winds blowing from land to sea are known as land breeze (Offshore wind).

B. Match the columns.

1. Weather - over a small period

2. Climate - over long period
3. Humidity - rainfall
4. Altitude - height above sea level
5. Sea breeze - moderate climate

C. Fill in the blanks.

1. Weather affects our food habits and clothes we wear.

2. The places situated near the sea have moderate climate.
3. Rain, snow and air pressure are elements of weather.
4. Temperature decreases with the increasing altitude.
5. The places located on or near the Equator are always hot.

A. Answer the following questions.

1. Define the term ‘climate’.

Ans: The weather conditions prevailing at a place during the course of many years is called
climate.

2. (No question is given) number 2 is missed in textbook.

3. What effect does altitude have on the climate of a place?

Ans: Altitude affects the climate of a place in following ways:

 The temperature decreases with increasing altitude.

 The places at lower altitude are hotter.
 The places at higher altitude such as hilly areas are cooler.
 The places at high altitude feel cooler even in summer.
4. How do winds affect the climate of a place?

Ans: Winds affect the climate of a place in following ways:

 The winds that blow from sea to land carry moisture with them.
 They bring rain to the coastal areas.
 Due to the winds blow on and off to shores, coastal areas enjoy moderate
climate.
 The wind blowing from land to sea will be warm and dry.
 Similarly, if these winds are blowing from cold areas, they will be cold and
dry in winter.
5. What type of atmospheric conditions do coastal regions enjoy?

Ans: Coastal regions enjoy moderate climate throughout the year.

6. How is climate different from weather?

Ans: The difference between climate and weather is given below:

so.
Meteorologists study and forecast weather. Climatologists study and forecast climate.

7. How do altitude and the landscape influence climate?

Ans: Altitude and the landscape influence climate in following ways:

 The places at lower altitude are hotter than the places at higher altitude.
 The places located near mountains have a cool and pleasant weather throughout the year.
 Places located near a hot desert have high temperatures during summer season.

8. Why are some areas extremely humid?

Ans: Some areas are extremely humid as they lie between Tropic of Cancer in the north to
Tropic of Capricorn in the south, and receive direct rays of the Sun.

9. Does the presence of water bodies such as oceans have any effect on the climate of a
region?
Ans: Yes, it definitely does.
 Presence of water bodies like oceans does have an effect on the climate of a region.
 The places situated near water bodies have moderate climate throughout the year
as they experience cool sea breeze.
10. Name the climatic zones of the Earth.

Ans: The climatic zones of the Earth are Torrid, Temperate and Frigid.

 Torrid or Tropical Zone:

 It stretches from Tropic of Cancer in the north to Tropic of Capricorn in the south.
 It experiences hot and humid climate throughout the year.
 Temperate Zone:
 It extends from the Tropic of Cancer to the Arctic Circle in the Northern
Hemisphere, and from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Antarctic Circle in the
Southern Hemisphere.
 This zone is neither too hot nor too cold.
 Frigid Zone:
 This zone covers the regions between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole in the
Northern Hemisphere, and region between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole
in the Southern Hemisphere.
 The climate here is extremely cold.
