EXTENSIONS: The Suffixes –ness and -ity
The suffixes NESS and ITY mean quality of or state of being. When you add –ness or -ity to some
adjectives, they become nouns.
Conscious + ness = Consciousness (state of being conscious).
Responsible + ity = Responsibility (quality of being responsible).
Add the correct suffix –ness or –ity to these adjectives

PART VI.- EXTENSIONS: Adjectives to describe Feelings


Look at this sentence:

He worked with patients who were very depressed or behave in strange ways.

Depressed is an adjective that describes a feeling. There are many adjectives to describe feelings.

PART VII.- EXTENSIONS : Antonyms
Look at this sentence:

1952, Garcia Marquez first novel was rejected by a publisher.

Fortunately, the publisher still accepted it.

Rejected and accepted are antonyms or opposites.

PART VIII.- EXTENSIONS : The Suffix –OUS

Look at this sentence:

Others said envious kung fu masters had killed Bruce Lee.

The suffix –ous means “full of” or “having the quality of”. When we add –ous to some nouns, they
become adjectives.

Envy + -ous = envious (full of envy)

Make adjectives from the nouns in parentheses by adding –ous. Make changes in the spelling
where necessary.

PART IX.- EXTENSIONS: Compound Adjectives with Present Participles

Look at this sentence:

Brandon is as famous for his death-defying adventures as he is for his business achievements.

Death-defying is a compound adjective. One way to form compound adjectives is to combine a


noun or an adjective with the present participle of the verb.

death + defying = death-defying (that defies death)

long + lasting = long-lasting (that lasts for a long time)

Change each phrase into a phrase with a compound adjective.
