Question 1

VLAN is built as an alternate solution for routers

VLAN is a custom network which is created by combining two or more LAN together. The advantage of
this is the ability to combine two or more networks together and consider it as a single network which is
also very similar to the routers task in the network. It is virtual and it is treated like a physical network
which is used in day to day networking.

There are three types of VLAN available and they are port based, the protocol based and the MAC based.

VLAN divides subnets in the network but do not have the capability to send packets through the
subnetted sections whereas the routers can access any network through the routing methods, protocols in
the router in order to send packets. VLAN can be assumed to have routing properties upto some extent
when broadcasting is taken into account.

When transferring data, routers take more time with compared to VLAN to switch through networks
Therefore the traffic increases in the whole network, then by using the VLAN the traffic can be
minimized. By this broadcasting domain within the LAN can be subnetted to various broadcasting
domains without using routers simply by the bridging softwares.

Question 2
Advantages of VLAN when comparing with LAN

 Virtual workgroup than LAN

 The performance
 Simplicity
 Cost reduction
 Sercurity

 Virtual workgroup than LAN

The companies that have several branches named management, financial, development teams can work
together using VLAN with a given amount of time in the same workspace or the building. It is faster than
LAN and it will provide the broadcasting among all the parties in the building making the work easier.

Easier than the teams getting along closer together to perform work.

 The performance

The networks are having high broadcast traffic, via VLAN the unneccesary traffic among the devices are
reduced and will reduce the data traffic on the network itself.

When routers are used for different LAN, high data traffic builds up in the routers by creating VLAN
subnetted broadcasting, the data traffic is reduced since the subnetted is done through the switches.

 Simplicity

When a new user arrives the recabling, moving the devices in the LAN is necessary but with VLAN all
the workload is reduced and the new user has to be added into the network by the administration then the
routing updates are not necessary here.

 Cost reduction

The routers and wiring expensive cables are not necessary when using these VLAN strategies in the
network.

 Sercurity

VLAN is highly secured and can be used by the managers appointed. The other users are not allowed to
access the privacy of the VLAN therefore this is highly protective when compared to LAN.
