Third Semester (Supplementary)
CIRCUIT THEORY
Time: Three hours Maximum Marks: 60
Answer Question No.1 compulsorily. (12 x 1 = 12)
Answer One Question from each unit. (4 x 12 = 48)

1. Answer the following:


(a) Define ideal current source.
(b) What is the difference between unilateral and bilateral
network?
(c) Define co-tree.
(d) Write phase relation between voltage and current in pure
inductor.
(e) What are RMS and average value of sine wave?
(f) What is reactive power?
(g) State Norton’s theorem.
(h) What is the significance of resonance?
(i) Find the DC and RMS value of v(t)= 10 + 40 sinωt.
(j) State final value theorem.
(k) What is the Laplace transform of step input?
(l) How to represent a capacitor with initial condition in
PSPICE?

UNIT – I
2. (a) Illustrate KVL and KCL with example. (6M)
(b) Determine the current in the 5 Ω resistor in the
network shown in figure (6M)

3. (a) Derive the relation between branch voltage matrix


[Vb], twig voltage matrix [VT] and nodal matrix [Vn]. (6M)
(b) Write the node equations of the network as shown in
figure below. (6M)

UNIT – II
4. (a) Determine the effective (RMS) value of the current
waveform as shown in figure

(6M)

(b) Show that the average power consumed in pure


inductor and a pure capacitor is zero. (6M)

5. (a) An inductive coil takes 10 A and dissipates
1000 W, when connected to a supply of 250 V, 25 Hz.
Calculate (i) the impedance (ii) the effective resistance
(iii) reactance (iv) the inductance (v) power factor.
Also, draw the vector diagram. (6M)

(b) A series combination of R and C is in parallel with a
50  resistor. A 50 Hz source results in a total current
of 7 A, a current of 5 A through 50  resistance and a
current of 2.3 A in the RC branch (i) Draw the phasor
diagram of the circuit and find the values of R & C
(ii) find active, reactive power and power factor of the
circuit. (6M)

UNIT – III

6. (a) Using Superposition theorem, find the current


through 4  resistor in the circuit shown in figure.

(b) Using Thevenin’s theorem, find the current through
10  resistor in the circuit shown in figure. (6M)

7. (a) Derive an expression for bandwidth in terms of


quality factor of a parallel resonant circuit. (6M)
(b) A series RLC circuit consists of resistance R = 16 Ω,
inductance L = 0.5 mH and capacitance C = 2 µF.
Calculate the quality factor at resonance, bandwidth
and half-power frequencies? (6M)

UNIT – IV
8. (a) Find the Laplace transform of the non-sinusoidal
periodic waveform as shown in figure below. (4M)

(b) Determine v(t) at t > 0 and calculate its value at


t = 1 s and 4 s.The switch has been in position A for a
long time. At t = 0, the switch moves to B.

9. (a) Illustrate DC analysis and AC analysis in PSPICE
with an example. (4M)
(b) Write a PSPICE program for the following circuit to
print the values of current through each resistor. (8M)
