Mathematics 5: Estimation of Whole Numbers

This mathematics lesson teaches students how to estimate whole numbers using rounding. It provides examples of estimating addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students are given practice problems to round numbers in addition and subtraction problems to the nearest thousand and estimate the answers. For multiplication problems, students are instructed to round the factors to the highest place value and multiply the rounded numbers to estimate products.

Introduction
Hello genius! I hope you learned a lot in our previous lesson.
This week’s module contains instructions and set of activities that you need to accomplish
for you to learn new knowledge in Estimation of Whole Numbers.

Pre-test

Solve the following:

1. 4563 + 2435 = __________ 5. 253 x 12 = __________
2. 7889 + 5674 = __________ 6. 892 x 21 = __________
3. 6736 - 2324 = __________ 7. 24 ÷ 5 = __________
4. 9867 – 4536 = __________ 8. 303 ÷ 3 = __________

Study 1

Estimation is not guessing. It is giving approximate answer.

Estimation is a process of approximating the answer in order to avoid an unreasonable answer
due to careless mistakes.
Examples:
Addition Subtraction
3254 3000 8756 9000
+ 2144 + 2000 - 5534 - 6000
5398 5000 estimated value 3222 3000 estimated
value

Multiplication
In estimating products, we round off the factors to its nearest highest place value, then
multiply the rounded numbers.
Note: In rounding off numbers to its nearest highest/greatest place value, only one
whole number is retained and the rest will be 0. Then multiply the estimated factors.
Since it ends in zero/s multiply the non zero digits, and count the number of zeros
as the estimated product.
362 = 400 nearest hundred (highest place value)
x 21 = x 20 nearest tens (highest place value)
362 8000 estimated product
+ 724_
7602 actual product
Activities
A. Round the numbers to the nearest thousand. Then estimate the value
example
6825 + 3564 = 11000
7000 4000

1. 8576 + 3464 =_________ 4. 8796 - 6575 =_______

____ ____ ____ ____

2. 9747 + 5124 =_________ 5. 4575 - 2763 =_______

____ ____ ____ ____

3. 3598 + 4325 =_________ 6. 6756 - 4563 =_______

____ ____ ____ ____

B. Estimate the product

example
2334 = 2000
x 42 = 40

80 000

1. 2346 = 2. 248 =
x 467 = x 26 =

3. 485 = 4. 7654 =
x 467 = x 92 =

5. 7435 =
x 349 =
