Types of Deaerating Equipment
1- Open feedwater heaters: 0.5 to 1 ppm O2
2- Vacuum degasifiers: 0.29 to 0.43 ppm O2
3- Deaerators and deaerating heaters
•40 ppb O2 for heater
•7 ppb O2 for deaerators(can get down to 1 ppb)
•little removal of CO2, NH3, H2S
The other major category of deaerator is a spray and tray type deaerator.
This uses the same principal of the spray and the steam, but adds trays to allow the water to cascade
down and obtain more contact time with the steam, This step increases the efficiency of the
operation.
A spray and tray type deaerator should be able to reduce the oxygen level to 7 - 10 ppb.
The deaerator is also frequently the place in the system where the condensate and make-up water
are mixed.
Once the waters have been mixed, and deaerated, there is still some oxygen remaining, This oxygen
must also be removed to prevent corrosion in the boiler.
There are many types of oxygen scavenger on the market. The one most commonly used is
sulfite. There are others which can be used, but their use is regulated by the FDA, so it is wise to
check regulatory issues before using them.
The most effective place to feed an oxygen scavenger is directly to the downcomer between the
steam dome and the storage section of the deaerator, or to the storage section directly ,This will
provide the longest reaction time to allow the scavenger to remove all the oxygen prior to the water
entering the boiler.
Deaerator(DA) KPI’s:
• dissolved O2 < 7 ppb(spray-tray),
• steady, forceful plume, no spitting
• ΔT(sat steam-dome) = 0.6-2oC, ΔT(dome-storage) < 3oC
• Pressure > 15 kPag, storage temp > 104oC
