Assessment: Rubric CLO 3 Practical 1: Buoyancy Concept

The document provides instructions for two practical experiments related to fluid mechanics. The first experiment is intended to demonstrate the concept of buoyancy, requiring students to perform the experiment, record a video demonstrating it, and explain what happened. The second experiment uses water jets from a bottle, providing procedures to create the jets and instructions to record a video of the experiment and explain the steps and results. The assessment rubric evaluates students on fluid mechanics skills and principles, application of concepts, analysis, and solution of problems.

Assessment: Rubric CLO 3

Practical 1: Buoyancy concept

The principle of buoyancy states that the buoyant force acting on an object placed in a fluid is
equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. An object completely immersed in a
fluid (liquid or gas) displaces a volume of fluid exactly equal to the volume of the object. The
weight of that volume of displaced fluid is the buoyant force acting on the object.

Instruction:
1. Perform an experiment to understand the basic concept of buoyancy.
2. Record a video of your experiment to show the concept of buoyancy.
3. State or mention clearly in the video step by step procedures involved.
4. Summarize and explain what happened in your experiment.

Practical 2: Water-jets from a bottle

Instruction:
1. Perform an experiment based on the procedures given:

a) Cut a piece of self-adhesive tape a few centimeters longer than the distance between
the bottom and the top hole. Stick the tape vertically on the bottle to cover all the
holes. Fill the bottle with water, put it on a flat surface and quickly pull the tape off
the bottle.
OR
b) Obtain push pins (of as large a diameter as possible) and simply push them into the
wall of the plastic bottle at the places where you want the holes. Fill the bottle with
water and place it on a flat surface. Quickly remove the push pins starting from the
top.

2. Record the video of your experiment.

3. State or mention clearly in the video step by step procedures involved.

4. Summarize and explain what happened in your experiment.

Notes: The content of the video is based on your group creativities. Marks are given
fully based on the video.
