I. Purpose
To outline job functions of all laboratory staff.

II. Scope
All members of the laboratory section.

III. Job Functions


a. PATHOLOGIST
1. Supervises and directs activities of the clinical laboratories in accordance with accepted
national standards and administrative policies of the hospital.
2. Establishes department procedures and methods.
3. Serves as consultant to other physicians, to interpret laboratory findings and assist in
determining appropriate method and extent of treatment necessary.
4. Participates, along with administrative and technical programs and recommends methods
and procedures for coordination of laboratory services with related patient care services.
5. Investigates and studies trends and developments in pathology practices and techniques and
evaluates their adaptability to specific needs of the laboratory.
6. Provides pathology services to aid in the diagnosis of diseases and the treatment of patients.
7. Conducts consultation for problematic and unusual macroscopic and microscopic examina-
tions of specimens of body tissues, fluids, and secretions, and diagnoses nature of
pathological condition. Prepares report on each case, incorporating recommendations for
treatment and further work-up.

b. CHIEF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
1. Assigns and supervises activities of medical technologists, technicians, aides and clerks.
2. Requisition of supplies and equipments.
3. Directs training of technologists and technicians assigned to the section.
4. Prepares budget for the fiscal year and submits to administrative officials for approval.
5. Supervises all laboratory work, demonstrating new techniques to staff and performing difficult
tasks demanded by complex or unusual situations.
6. Maintains all documents necessary for laboratory accreditation.
7. Performs tasks as medical technologist.

c. MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
1. Performs hematological, chemistry, microscopic and bacteriologic tests and other laboratory
tests.
2. Responsible for proper documentation of all test reports and safekeeping
3. Responsible for maintenance/calibration of laboratory equipment and supplies.
4. Submits to chief medical technologists the budget for his/her assigned section.
5. Provides instructions to medical laboratory technician, aides/clerk.

d. MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN


Medical technologists (non-licensed) may perform all essential laboratory functions provided
they work under direct supervision of a licensed medical technologist.

e. LABORATORY ASSISTANT
1. Works under the direct supervision of a medical technologist
2. Assists the medical technologists and technicians in performing assigned non-technical
laboratory functions.
3. Responsible for laboratory cleanliness and upkeep.

f. LABORATORY CLERKS
1. Works under the direct supervision of a medical technologist and medical technician
2. Records and maintains laboratory results and other documents.
