PERFORMANCE TASK - Rational Equations

1. The document provides guidelines for a performance task involving solving rational equation problems. 2. Students are given work and motion problems and must show the work to solve them in a specific format. 3. Their work must be photographed, compiled, and submitted by the deadline for evaluation based on accuracy, reflection, presentation.

PERFORMANCE TASK – Rational Equations
GUIDELINES:
1. Students will be given 2 real-life problems (1 work problems and 1 motion problems).
Their task is to solve the problems, using the methods and concepts learned in class.
2. The format of the solution must be as follows:
• GIVEN. State the given facts in the problem, translated into symbols and numbers.
• REQUIRED. Determine the variable being asked in the problem
• APPROACH. State (in your own words) how you are going to solve the problem.
• TABLE OF VALUES. For motion problems only
• SOLUTION. The step-by-step actual solving process. Must be complete.
• ANSWER. State the answer in a sentence. It must answer the question in the problem.
• CONCLUSION. State your own insight in solving the problem. Include your realization
of the problem’s significance in real life
3. The solution must be written in a bond paper (or any clean sheet of paper).
PERFORMANCE TASK – Rational Equations
GUIDELINES:
4. Write legibly. Avoid erasures. (Remember, that is a performance task not an
ordinary activity!)
5. Take photos of your work. The photo must be clear ,not blurry, and large
enough for the contents to be readable.
6. Send a compilation of the photos of your performance task in NMLZ under
“PERFORMANCE TASK – RATIONAL EQUATIONS).
7. Submission is until October 20-22, 2021, 11:59 PM

PROBLEMS
• Work Problem
There are two pumps pumping out water in a certain tank in Usada Constructions.
The operator switched on Pump A at 3:00 AM. Pump A automatically stopped at
2:00 PM after filling up the tank completely. The next day at 3:00 AM, Pump A was
on standby and the operator switched on Pump B. At 11:00 PM, Pump B stopped
indicating the tank was full.
The operator raised a problem to the management concerning the money and
time wasted by having each pump work one at a time. So the engineers
redesigned the system allowing the two pumps run at the same time. The new
design was, of course, efficient. How long will it take for the two pumps to fill the
tank together?

PROBLEMS
• Motion Problem
Mio and Shion decided to go boating across the nearby bay. The water runs at 2
kph in the northwest direction. Going southeast, they had travelled 3 km. While
going northwest, they boated about 5 km. If they took exactly the same time going
southeast as it was going northwest, what is the speed of their boat?
