ASEAN is one of the cornerstones of the Philippines' foreign and trade policies. This is manifested
in the Philippines policy to promote a more peaceful, stable, and free South East Asia, through
the pursuit of different initiatives, in the policy making, economic, trading and functional
cooperation activities. ASEAN is one of the cornerstones of the Philippines' foreign andtrade

trading and functional cooperation activities. ASEAN has come a longway since the five foreign
ministers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore,and Thailand came together in
Bangkok in August 1967 to establish an organization thatwould promote economic and social
cooperation. Since then, ASEAN has evolved from aloose and informal association into a
Community of ten states encompassing political-security, economic, and socio-cultural pillars,
and sharing an ASEAN identity. It has alsoweathered several challenges – the Third Indochina
War in the 1970s, the Asian financialcrisis in 1997-1998, and the outbreak of SARS in 2003,
among others. ASEAN hasdemonstrated adaptability and longevity, and as it commemorates its
50th foundinganniversary in 2017, it is high time to reflect on its past achievements and
itscontinuously evolving role in the world.
