INSPIRE SCHEME

 The scheme was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 13th


December 2008 and was implemented in 2009-10.

 Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has


been running the INSPIRE Award scheme since 2009-10.

 Scheme covers students in the age group of 10-32 years in five different
components.

INSPIRE AWARDS – MANAK

 INSPIRE AWARDS – MANAK: An initiative to foster a culture of


innovation and creative thinking amongst school students to address the
societal need through Science and Technology.

 Objective: Attract talent, have them exposed to science at an early age


(10-15 years or Standard 6-10) and help towards building a critical human
resource pool for strengthening and expanding the science and technology
system and increase the research and development base.

 Targeting one million original technological ideas/ innovations rooted in


science and societal applications that solve daily life problems.

 INSPIRE Award – MANAK aligns with the action plan for “Start-up
India” initiative launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.

IMPLEMENTATION

Awareness and capacity building of District, State and School level


1 functionaries across the country through regional workshops, audio-
visual tools and literature.

Organising internal competitions in schools and nominations of two to


three best original ideas, in any Indian language, by respective the

Foundation (NIF).

Disbursement of INSPIRE Award of INR 10,000 into bank accounts of


5 students through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme .

Organisation of District Level Exhibition and Project Competition


6 (DLEPC) by district/State authorities and shortlisting of 10,000 best
ideas/innovations for State Level Exhibition and Project Competitions.

for further shortlisting of top 1,000 ideas/innovations. At this stage, NIF
will provide Mentoring support to students for development of
7 prototypes at State level by NIF, in coordination with reputed academic
and technology institutions of the country for development of
prototypes.

Selection of ideas/innovations will be based on novelty, social


8 applicability, environment friendliness, user friendliness and
comparative advantage over the existing similar technologies.

Showcasing 1,000 best ideas/innovations at National Level Exhibition


9 & Project Competition (NLEPC) and shortlisting of top 60
prototypes/innovations for national awards and future direction.
Consideration of top 60 ideas by NIF for product/process development
and Connecting them with other schemes of NIF/DST and display of top
10 innovations at the annual Festival of Innovation & Entrepreneurship
(FINE) .
Mentorship workshops before NLEPC 2019

• NIF will coordinate with reputed educational and technical institutions for
holding of workshops and imparting training to assist students for refinement of
ideas and development of prototype models.
• Educational and Technical institutions will preferably be in the home states or
neighbouring states of the students.

ABOUT THE SCHEME
OBJECTIVE Promote research and innovation amongst young students

TARGET GROUP Students of class 6 to 10; Age: 10 -15 years


SCHOOL All schools of the country are eligible irrespective of Central/

TIMELINES

NATIONAL COMPETITION (NLEPC)
 1000 Prototype Models/Projects will participate at the Annual National Level
Exhibition and Project Competition (NLEPC) to be organised by DST.

 Jury would shortlist top 60 Models/Projects for National Awards and future
ideation.

 Top 60 Models/Projects will be selected for National Awards and top three (3) will
be given National Awards (Gold / Silver / Bronze medals).

 The top 60 National winners will also participate in Festival of Innovation &
Entrepreneurship.

 The projects having potential of Product/Process development will be further


supported for commercialisation.

 The projects having possibility of filing the patents will be supported by the
NIF/TIFAC.

 Every year selected students will also be sent to Japan under Sakura Exchange
Program by DST.
Things to note

Related to Bank
1) Account Name, Account These should be cross checked with Bank passbook and
number and IFSC Code filled correctly. Bank account of the student should be
2) Bank Account is non- operational. If student has no bank account, a Zero
operative balance or Joint account with parent may be opened and
then only details included in the nomination form.
Incase of any mismatch/ error, funds will NOT get
transferred.
Utilisation Certificate (UC)/ Statement of Expenditure (SE)
UC / SEs The UCs/SEs should be sent to DST immediately after
the DLEPC/SLEPC to enable quick release of funds for
the next time. UCs should be in GFR 2017 format.
Balance Available with State Authority
Balance Any balance along with accrued interest should be
returned to the Government through bharatkosh.gov.in
and receipt sent to DST along with UC/SE. Balance
cannot be used for any other purpose whatsoever.
Things to note

Exhibitions
Exhibitions Not all students who have received Rs 10,000/- INSPIRE Award participate in
District Exhibitions. Similarly many shortlisted students at District level, do not
participate at State level and National level.
Submission of Nominations
Filling the In the title of the project, a suitable title describing the project should be given
nomination (for example “A device to climb Areca nut trees”, “An assistive walking aid for

Remember all Title of the Project: Travelling bag with folding seats
projects are Project Summary: Many a times travellers have to stand while waiting for a bus
or train at the bus/train station as the number of seats available are few. The
first screened
student has developed a travelling bag where a folding seat has been
online incorporated. This can be unfolded and used for sitting while waiting for the
bus/train thereby eliminating the discomfort while standing for long time. It will
be especially useful for ladies and elderly.
