IV. PROCEDURES

A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson: Pre-assessment

From the given examples and non examples of radical equations, derive the definition of a radical
equation.
Examples Non Examples

Radical - is an expression in the form √n a where n is a positive integer

and a is an element of the real number system.

Radical Equations – equations containing radicals with variables in

the radicand

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

In this lesson we will know the connection between expressions with rational exponents and radicals
and we are able to know the step in simplifying radical equations and lastly we are able to discover
the real applications of radical equations in our day to day basis .

C. Presenting examples/ instances of the lesson

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1.

1. How will you identify radical equations?

2. What is an extraneous solution?
3. How do you solve radical equation?
4. Why is it necessary to check all solutions when solving radical equations?

Guided Practice
1. Solve and check:
√ x=12
√ x = 12
(√ x )2 = (12)2 Square both sides
x = _________ Solve for x
Check: √ x = 12
√ 144 = 12
_____ = 12
The solution is ___.
2. Solve and check:
√ x−3 = 6
√ x−3 = 6
(√ x−3)____ = 6___ Square both sides.
x – 3 = ____
x = _____
Check: √ x−3=6
√ ¿¿ −3 = 6
√ ¿¿ ¿ = 6
____ = 6
The solution is _____.
3. Solve and check:
4 + √ x−2 = x
4 + √ x−2 = x
√ x−2 = x - __ Isolate radical
expression
(√ x−2)---=(x-_)-
x–2 = x2-_+_
x2 - __ + __ =
(x - _)(x - _) = 0
x = __ ; x = _

.H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

Radical equations are equations containing radicals with variables in the radicand. To solve
equations with radicals, place the radical expression on one side of the sign of equality, and
then raise both sides of the equation to the index power to eliminate the radical and solve as
usual. Test the roots, discarding those that are extraneous. Extraneous solution is a solution
that does not satisfy the given equation.
I. Evaluating learning

Solve and check. SOLVE the following problems.

1. √ 2 x−1 = 5
2. √3 x 2 - 4 = 0 1. The legs of a right triangle are 6 cm
3. √3 3−7 x - 3 = 0 and 8cm . How long is the hypotenuse?
4. √ 2 x +1 – √ x−3 = 2
5. √ x−3 - √ x = 1 2. A tent is 3 meters high at the center.
One end of the rope (6 meters long) is
tied at the top of the tent while the
other end is fastened to the ground .
How far from the center of the tent is
the rope fastened?

J. Additional activities for application or remediation

1. Create 5 word problems that involves a radical equation and show

your solution.
