INTRODUCTION
COVID19 virus caused global lockdowns in every part of the world. People are forced to stay at
home especially teenagers who are minors (below 18 years old). Pandemic lockdowns brought huge
problems not only to the country but also to the people. The restrictions of the pandemic were across
the board. For teenagers, restrictions have meant months of virtual learning, more time isolated from
friends, and the canceling of important social activities like sports, school performances, graduations,
and proms (Drillinger, 2021). Teenagers who were condemned inside their houses experienced
psychological effects during pandemic lockdowns. According to the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital
National Poll on Children’s Health at Michigan Medicine, a national poll shows that 46 percent of
parents say their teen had shown signs of a new or worsening mental health condition since the
beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. One of the stated mental health conditions is social anxiety.
People with social anxiety disorder or social phobia, however, experience intense fear and anxiety when
they feel that they are the subject of attention (Surendra, 2021). Also, people with social anxiety
disorder display a combination of physical and behavioral symptoms (Surendra, 2021).
This study aims to examine the definition of social anxiety disorder or social phobia in a
teenager’s perspective. The researcher will investigate teenagers who had experienced social anxiety
disorder and their coping mechanisms to overcome it.
