TECHNICAL SERVICE DATA SHEET
GARDOCELAN 444 Code: 6118
Rev: 01
Review. Date 23/03/2015
SCOPE
GARDOCLEAN 444 is a heavy duty alkaline cleaner designed for the cleaning of iron
and steel. It is particularly suitable if the cleaned work is to be subsequently phosphate.
This is for immersion application.
MATERIALS
GARDOCLEAN 444
TESTING REAGENTS.
0.1 N sulfuric acid
Phenolphthalein
EQUIPMENT
All equipment for use with GARDOCLEAN 444 is constructed of mild steel.
MAKE UP OF CLEANING SOLUTIONS
Carry out the following operations in the order given:
(1) Determine the working volume of the tank and run in clean water until it is about
Three-quarters full.
(2) Heat water to 60 deg C
(3) Add GARDOCLEAN 444 powder at the rate of 20 - 40Kgs per 1000 litres of
cleaning Solutions required and mix thoroughly until the powder is dissolved.
The strength of the solution may be varied depending on the amount and the type of
soil to be removed. Concentrations of up-to 50 Kgs per 1000 ltrs for immersion
application are used.
(4) make up to operating level with clean water.

(5) Heat to 60 deg C and mix thoroughly.
OPERATION
The work is immersed in the solution for sufficient time to allow cleaning to be
completed.
The time required is usually between 5 to 10 minutes at 60 -- 65 deg C in the case of
immersion application
After cleaning, the metal is rinsed with one or two stages of water rinses, which are
overflowed sufficiently to prevent excessive contamination. The cleaning solution
gradually accumulates grease and dirt and it should be discarded when contamination
interferes with cleaning. In order to prolong cleaner life and improve its efficiency on
large installations such as sheet and strip lines it is recommended that a portion be
continuously discarded and the strength maintained by necessary additions of
GARDOCLEAN444 powder.
TESTING AND CONTROL
Take a 10 ml sample of GARDOCLEAN 444 solution, add about 10 drops of
phenolphthalein and titrate with 0.1 N sulphuric acid until the pink color is
discharged. Note the volume of 0.1N sulphuric acid required.
A solution prepared as above i.e. 40 Kgs per 1000 ltrs should require 52+ 2 ml. of 0.1N
sulfuric acid and is known as 52 point solution.
The strength of the cleaning solution is determined in accordance with the following
table:
Kg's Of GARDOCLEAN 444/1000 liter bath Sol. POINTAGE
20 26+ 2
40 52 + 2
An addition of 0.76 Kg GARDOCLEAN 444 powders per 1000ltrs is required to raise
the free alkali pointage by one.
SAFETY PRECAUTION
GARDOCLEAN 444 is mildly alkaline. When making additions of GARDOCLEAN
444 powder to the solution, add the material slowly to the surface of the solution to
avoid splashing/spattering. Do not take it internally.
