Problem Solving: Show your complete solution and interpret the results.

1. Construct a frequency distribution of the ages of 40 patients with hypertension at

hospital X from the given data, with lowest class interval of 20 – 25. Construct a histogram
and a frequency polygon of the frequency distribution. Also the less than cumulative
frequencies, greater than cumulative frequencies, and the class marks of every
class interval.

2. The number of sticks of cigarettes of 36 randomly selected samples in a barangay is
given below. Determine the mean, median, mode, first quartile, second quartile and
third quartile.
14 9 12 15 20 13 12 21 24 30 18 20
20 8 10 7 10 20 27 30 15 27 20 8
21 12 15 17 13 21 12 10 17 10 25 14

a.)Mean
=14+9+12+15+20+13+12+21+24+30+18+20+20+8+10+7+10+20+27+30+15+27
+ 20+8+21+12+15+17+13+21+12+10+17+10+25+14
= 597/36
= 16.58 or 17

b.)Median
7 8 8 9 10 10 10 10 12 12 13 13 14 14 15 15 15 17 17 18 20 20 20 20 20 21 21
21 24 25 27 27 30 30
Median = 15+15/2
= 15

c.)Mode
=20

d.) first quartile

= 36 x 1 / 4
=9

Q1 = 9th observations
=12

e.) second quartile

=36 x 2 / 4
=18

Q2 = 18th observations
= 15+15/2
= 15

f.) third quartile

=36 x 3 / 4
=27

Q3 = 27 observations
=20
3. The distribution of age (in years) of 45 positive covid 19 patients is admitted in hospital
X is shown below. Calculate the following a.) mean b.) median c.) mode
d.) third quartile e.) fifth decile f.) 30th percentile.

Age f
80 – 89 2
70 – 79 4
60 – 69 3
50 – 59 10
40 – 49 13
30 – 39 8
20 – 29 4
10 – 19 1
4. Consider the distribution of the number of hours spent in the Internet Café per week by
50 medical students is shown below. Compute the a.) mean b.) median
c.) mode d.) third quartile e.) 7th decile f.) 75th percentile
g.) standard deviation

No. of Hours f
54 – 56 5
51 – 53 7
48 – 50 8
45 – 47 15
42 – 44 10
39 – 41 5

a.) mean
𝑥̅ = 2351 / 50
= 47.02
b.) median
𝑚𝑑 = 44.5 + {25 − 15}3 / 15
𝑚𝑑 = 44.5 + (10 ) 3 / 15
𝑚𝑑 = 44.5 + 2
md= 46.5
c.) mode
𝑚𝑜 = 44.5 + {15 − 5 } 3 / ( 2 (15 ) − 5 − 7 )
𝑚𝑜 = 44.5 +{10 } 3 / 18
𝑚𝑜 = 44.5 + 30 / 18
𝑚𝑜 = 44.5 + 1.7
mo= 46.2

d.) third quartile

Q3= 47.5+ (33.75-30)3 / 8
= 47.5 + 2.8
=50.3

e.) 7 th decile
𝐷 7 = 47.5 + {35 − 30 } 3 / 8 𝐷 7 = 47.5 + { 5 } 3 / 8
𝐷 7 = 47.5 + 15 / 8
𝐷 7 = 47.5 + 1.9
𝐷 7 = 49.4

f.) 75th percentile

𝑃75 = 47.5 + {37.5 − 30}3 / 8 𝑃75 = 47.5 + {7.5}3 / 8
𝑃75 = 47.5 + 22.5 / 8
𝑃75 = 47.5 + 2.8
𝑃75 = 50.3

g.) standard deviation

SD= 130.76
