Q1. Based on the reading below, give your opinion on the degree of staying connected with internet-
based devices and social-media. [Answer length: 250-300 words] The movement to disable (alerts
and notifications) and disconnect (from internet-enabled devices and social media) has gained more
momentum than ever before. The awareness that being always connected, slavishly letting our
phone’s notifications command our attention, is harming our productivity, sleep and well-being,
became mainstream this year. In September 2018, Pew Research Centre released a report stating
26% of US adults deleted the Facebook app from their phones in the past year and 54% adjusted
their privacy settings. Recently, scandals related to privacy roiled Facebook, leading to greater
mistrust among the public. Twitter’s inability to address issues such as hate speech, vitriolic trolling,
and rape threats pushed users to quit in droves. Twitter reported a loss of 1 million monthly active
users between Q2 ’17 and Q2’. Even Snapchat saw a 1.5% decline in daily active users. Apple also
introduced Screentime in iOS 12, letting users or parents limit the time spent on the device as well as
specific apps. Device de-addiction apps such as Moment and Freedom, Arianna Huffington’s digital
detox app called Thrive, and concepts like digital detox getaways are gaining popularity. 2019 saw
the emergence of more media of this kind to help users connect less digitally and more, to use a
social media abbreviation, IRL. On the other side, this year continued to show us the catalysing and
transformative effects digital connections can have on communities. It has changed the fortunes of
ordinary people-turned-social-media celebrities and influencers, some of whom earn their
livelihoods now by leveraging this popularity. It has given women from tier-2 and -3 towns a tool to
channelise their networking abilities on Facebook and WhatsApp for social commerce and become
financially independent. This year, we saw social media microcosms gaining significant popularity.
Take Discord, for example. It is an app built to bring together a community of gamers. Similarly,
there are niche social media platforms for a community of auto enthusiasts online. These platforms
have given talented people new avenues to make money off their hobbies. Similarly, there is
tremendous scope in creating social media microcosms to connect farmers to agriculture scientists
and to others in their community; to connect doctors to patients and vice-versa. (Source: Economic
