Detailed Lesson Plan in Science-Rocks
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 100% of the students should be able to attain 85% of
proficiency to:
1. Define rocks
2. Identify the different types of rocks
3. Illustrate the Rock Cycle
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Rocks
B. Concept: The Earth’s building materials are the rocks. That is why the Earth is
often called “a ball of rock.” Rocks are combinations of minerals in varying
proportions. Rocks are classified into 3 groups according to how they are
formed. These are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Igneous
rocks form when molten rock (magma) originating from deep within the
Earth solidifies. There are two kinds of igneous rocks: intrusive which cools
and solidifies deep beneath the Earth’s surface and extrusive which cools
and solidifies at or near Earth’s surface. Sedimentary rocks are formed from
pre-existing rocks or pieces of once-living organisms. Sedimentary rocks
may be clastic, chemical or biologic. Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have
been substantially changed from their original igneous, sedimentary or
earlier metamorphic form.
