The document summarizes the key points from three videos about indigenous peoples' rights. The first video discusses discrimination faced by indigenous peoples in the Philippines and their lack of access to jobs, education, and land rights. It highlights the positive impact of the Indigenous Peoples' Rights Act (IPRA) in upholding land rights. The second video explains how ILO Convention 169 protects indigenous cultures, identities, and livelihoods by upholding land rights. It also notes indigenous peoples' role in protecting biodiversity and fighting climate change. REACTION PAPER
The first video that I’ve watch talked about “Protecting indigenous peoples' rights
in the Philippines” many of the IPs experienced discrimination, crisis, no jobs, employment
and livelihood opportunities were limited. Some IP’s not quite aware of their basic rights,
particularly on ancestral domain. When the ILO stepped in, that day they learned about
their rights, and what they can do with their land. I am grateful to know that ILO
Convention 169 in the Philippine Government has enacted a landmark legislation called
the Indigenous Rights Act IPRAS), which is consistent with the principles of ILO
Convention 169, it is the only legally binding instrument to recognize IP’s covering a wide
range of issues relating to the definition of one's own priorities and respect for cultures
and ways of life. And there is one person that inspire me, she said that her ancestral
knowledge, which has been passed on to her by the elders, has given her insight to
understand the spirit of her birth as an indigenous person in understanding the traditional
beliefs and systems of my community, and has led them to recommend work
opportunities that would fit their skills and minds. ILO’s helped to have decent work,
finished their studies and uplift their livelihood. I’m really happy to know that there’s a
person or people that God sent to protect the rights of the Indigenous people.
The Second video is the ”Indigenous Peoples: Agents of Change” this video
helped me to understand what is the power of ILO rights because without this law, many
of the IP’s suffered because of their past, IPS has been forced away from the lands and
territories the have traditionally occupied, leading to a loss livelihood, culture and identity.
How sad that many people didn’t know or didn’t recognize about their traditional
occupations and their knowledge, that they have skills that can fight against climate
change, but still IP’s and tribal people continue to be left behind. But I’m glad to hear this
kind of video that tells about indigenous peoples advantages such as they can protect
80% of our biodiversity on the planet. The ILO Convention No. 169 which only ensures
that IPs are valued, that their voices are heard, that their livelihoods are protected and
that their working conditions and social security are improved. It’s true that the Indigenous
peoples are agents of change and main allies for sustainable development and the fight
against climate change.
The last video that I’ve watched “Investigative Documentaries: Indigenous
Communities”. I was distressed about the issue of this video there was a law called
Republic Act 10083 Aurora Pacific Economic Zone (APECO), this law will make an economic
zone that Ancestral Domain of the Agta people will be covered or disappeared. This plan will
be the cause to loss of Filipino’s culture and traditions. The APECO think that it is going
to change the lives of the Agta tribes. This is another bribing method used by money-
making people to make profits from their land. I’m sad to hear this because they don't
care about the opinions of the Agta people. Life, freedom and security are the equivalent
of the land of the indigenous people, so it is important that they retain their land and stay
in their land, they have the right to be part of their land plans.
