GENERAL REVISION WORK SHEET FOR MID-TERM (AY2017-2018)

Chapter 1-Factors, polynomials & partial fractions

1. Find the remainder when 2𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 3 is divided by x + 1
Remainder =𝑓(−1) = −7
3 2
2. Determine the remainder 𝑥 − 6𝑥 + 𝑥 − 5 is divided by 𝑥 + 2
Remainder =𝑓(−2) = −39
3. If x=1,x= -2 and x=3 are the roots of a polynomial equation, determine the
polynomial equation.
𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 6 = 0
4. Given that x − 1 is a factor of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 6 find other two factors of
𝑓(𝑥)
Other two factors are (𝑥 − 3) and (𝑥 + 2)
3
5. Factorise completely Factorise 𝑥 − 7𝑥 − 6 and use it to solve the cubic equation:
(𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 + 2) = 0 → 𝑥 = 3, 𝑥 = −1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = −2

6. Determine the value of a, if (x+2) is a factor of 𝑥 3 − 𝑎𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 10

𝑎 = −3
7. The expression 6𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 7 leaves the same remainder when divided by
(𝑥 − 𝑎) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 (𝑥 + 2𝑎), where 𝑎 ≠ 0. Calculate the value of a.
1
Answer: a = 6
8. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 2 − 𝑏𝑥 + 2, find the values of a and b given that x+1 is a factor and
the remainder is -9 when divided by x+2

a=-1/2, b=-1/2
9. Express in partial fractions
8𝑥−1 7 25
a) (1−𝑥)(3+𝑥) = 4(1−𝑥) – 4(3+𝑥)
𝑥+24 4 3
b) = 𝑥−4 – 𝑥+3
𝑥 2 −𝑥−12
8𝑥−1 3 2−3𝑥
c) = 𝑥−2 + 𝑥 2 +1

10 2𝑥 2 −𝑥+1 𝐵 𝐶
Given that ≡ 𝐴 + 𝑥+1 + 𝑥−3, find the values of 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶.
𝑥 2 −2𝑥−3
𝐴 = 2, 𝐵 = −1, 𝐶 = 4
11. Given that
3𝑥−1 𝐴 𝐵
≡ 𝑥−1 + (𝑥−1)2 find the values of 𝐴 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵
