o written clear and coherent sentences using appropriate simple tenses
of verbs; and
o given the importance of using correct verb tenses in writing
paragraphs.

Learner’s Task

Lesson Overview

Hello, Grade Six learner! Congratulations, you are now in the Fourth Quarter
of this unique school year. For this week, you are going to study a lesson that you
may have already studied in your lower years – verbs.

A verb is a word that tells an action, a condition, or a state of being. Verbs


have multiple forms called tenses that tell us when an action occurs. In this lesson,
you will learn about simple tenses.

The present, past, and future tenses are called simple tenses.

Simple Present Tense

The present tense is used to express the following:

1. A habitual action or repeated action in the present

Jackie’s puppies sleep peacefully every night.


My little sister says a prayer before sleeping.
Our neighbors clean our purok every Sunday afternoon.

The expressions every night, before sleeping, and every Sunday afternoon
are time indicators that signal habitual action.

2. General timeless truths such as physical laws or customs

El Nińo causes drought in some areas and rain in others.


El Nińo and La Nińa differ from each other.

3. A present condition or state
I know the answer to the question.
The current water level of Libuacan Cold Spring is high.

4. Definitions
Drought refers to a long period of dry weather, with little or no rain at all.
Meteorology deals with the study of the weather.

5. A present event or action


Father collects the rainwater, and then uses it to water the lawn and plants.

6. An action done at the time of speaking


I see my mother coming out of the tricycle.

Remember: Verbs that end in -s or -es such as walks, talks, and cries are called
present tense singular. They go with singular noun subjects or with the subject
pronouns he, she, or it. Verbs in the present tense plural or base form go with plural
noun subjects and with the subject pronouns I, you, we, or they.

Simple Past Tense

This tense indicates that the action happened in the past. Regular verbs are
verbs whose past form end in -ed. In order to transform a regular verb into past
form, add -d or -ed or d at the end of the verb.

Irregular verbs are verbs with different past forms.

The past tense is used to express the following:

1. A definite completed action in the past


Our town experienced heavy rains last week.

2. A habitual or repeated action in the past


During summer last year, we went to a nearby beach almost every day.

3. A condition or situation in the past


Mrs. Santos owned a grocery store.
She seemed to have difficulty managing the store at first.

4. An event with duration in the past


Mrs. Reyes managed the shop for 20 years.
Her husband tended their farm for almost three decades.

Remember: The past form of a verb goes with any noun or pronoun subject.

Simple Future Tense

This is used to show an action that is expected to be done or to happen in


the future.

There are two main ways of expressing future action, plans, or intentions.

1. will/ shall + main verb (base form)

The following charts show the forms of verbs that express simple future tense
in different persons, singular or plural.

First person Second person Third person


Singular
I shall help. You will help. He/She/It will help.
I shall work. You will work. He/She/It will work.
Plural
We shall help. You will help. They will help.
We shall work. You will work. They will work.

Shall is usually used in the first person subjects I and we. Will is often used
with the main verb expressing future action in the second and third persons.

2. be/ + going to + main verb (base form)

There is another way of expressing future action. Learn about it in the


following chart:

I am going to help. You are going to help. He/She/It is going to help.
Plural
We are going to help. You are going to help. They are going to help.

Remember: The expression is going to is used with a singular subject; are going to
with a plural subject, and with the subject you; and, am going to with the subject
I.

Here are some time expressions that tell us that the action is in the future tense.

tomorrow next Christmas


next week years from now
tonight this afternoon
later next Friday

Directions: Choose the correct verb form to complete the sentence. Write the

Directions: Answer each question by writing a sentence with correct verb tense. In
order to know the verb tense to use, carefully read the question and look for time
clues.

Answer: Last week, President Duterte directed the DENR to strictly implement rules
on mine safety.

days and today he already knew how to ride the bike without my help. Tomorrow,
the two of us rode a bike from our house to the market.

1. Are the sentences correctly written?


2. Do the verbs used in the sentences affect the meaning of the passage?
