ASSIGNMENT 1

CLASS XII

TOPIC: MATRICES AND DETERMINANTS

Section A

1.Constract a 2X1 matrix , whose elements are given by

2. Evaluate: where I2= -1

A is a matrix of order 2x2 and = 225 find

3.If

A is a matrix of order 3 x 3 and |A|= 8, then write the value of |adj A|

4.If

5.How many 3x2 matrices you can construct with the elements 0 and 1

:
6.Evaluate

7.If |x1 xx| = |31 42| ,find the value of x.

8.Write the adjoint of the matrix

[ 24 −13 ]
10. If matrix A = [1 2 3 ] write AA’ , where A’ is the transpose of
matrix A.
Section B

1 .Find x, if =0

2.If [ x+23 x y −4y ] = [−46 34] , find the values of x and y.

3. Find a matrix X such that BX = 7A, where A =
[−35 31 ] and B =[ 03 -21 ]

4.If A 2 = A, for A = , find b.

5.If is singular then find x.

Section C

1. If f(x)=5x2+ 3x and A= [ 24 −13 ], find f(A)

Using Properties of Determinants Prove that

2. If A=[ 23 −34 ] show that A - 6A +17 I= O. Hence ,find A-

2 1

3.If A=[
1 −1 ]
then prove that A ¿ [
1−2 n ]
3 −4 1+2 n −4 n
n
Where n is any positive integer.
n
4.Find a matrix A such that

5.Without expanding evaluate

6.If A = Find a matrix B such that AB= BA = I2

7.If A = ,B= workout AB and BA. Also comment upon the possible conclusion.

8. Express the matrix A=

as a sum of symmetric and skew symmetric matrices.

9. If Δa= Evaluate

Section D

1.If Determine a and b.

3. Using matrices ,solve the system of equations

x+2y+z=7; x+3z=11; 2x-3y=1

4.If A= Find A-1. Hence solve the system of equations 3z -x-2y=4, 2x+3y+2z=2,

3x-3y-4z=11

5. Determine the product Hence solve the system of

equations x-y+z=4, x-2y-2z=9, 2x+y+3z=1

6.If f(x) , g(x), h(x) are three polynomials of degree 2 each then suggest the degree of the polynomial

7. Two schools A and B decided to award prizes to their students for three values honesty
(x),,punctuality (y) and obedience (z) .School A decided to award a total of Rs11,000 for three values
to 5,4,and 3 students respectively, while school B decided to award Rs 10,700 for the values to 4,3
and 5 students respectively. If all the three prizes together amount to Rs 2700, then solve the
system of equation so obtained by matrix method. Which value you prefer to award and why?

8.The management committee of a residential colony decided to award some of its members
for honesty, cooperation and supervision. The sum of awardees is 12.Three times the sum of
awardees for cooperation and supervision added to twice of the number of awardees for
honesty is 33. If the sum of the numbers of awardees for honesty and supervision is twice
the numbers of awardees forCooperation, find the numbers of awardees of each category
using matrices. Apart from the above mentioned category suggest two more values that
management can include.

9.Two cricket teams honoured their players for three categories, excellent batting, to the point
bowling and unparalleled fielding by giving Rs x, Rs y, Rs z per player respectively. The first team paid
respectively 2,2,and 1 players for the above categories with a total prize money of Rs11 lakhs, while
second team paid 1,2 and 2 players for the above categories for a total prize money of Rs9 Lakhs. If
the total award money of one person each of the categories amounts to Rs 6 lacs, then express the
above situation as a matrix equation and find the award money per person for each category.

For which of the mentioned category would you like to pay the most.
