Integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (Bess) With Scada
Since the invention of electricity, mankind has been working on efficient ways to store power
for use on demand. In response to shifting energy demands and technological advancements,
the energy storage business has evolved, adapted, and innovated during the last century. The
majority of energy storage solutions work by turning electrical energy into another type of
energy, which must subsequently be converted back to electrical power before being used.
Battery Energy Storage Systems stores energy during periods of high production/low demand
and then discharges it during periods of low production/high demand. BESS must be
monitored and regulated much like any other energy source in a Battery Storage System
system.
The Electricity Management System (EMS) keeps track of grid demand and how much
energy the Storage System can provide. Based on the control logic required and the battery
system's state of charge, the EMS provides an input signal to charge or discharge the battery.
The battery's health, output, voltage, temperature, fire alert, and level of charge are all
monitored by the Battery Management System (BMS). Based on the input signal, it also
adjusts the charging and discharging power.
The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system interfaces with RTUs, HMI
and Communication systems. It is seen as the centre of the entire operation which operators
can monitor and give orders to the plant.
