Integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (Bess) With Scada

The document discusses how battery energy storage systems integrate with SCADA systems. It explains that the BMS monitors battery data like state of charge, voltage and temperature, which it sends to the SCADA system. The SCADA system then directly interfaces with the BMS and other devices like inverters to control and regulate the batteries.

Presenting

Since the invention of electricity, mankind has been working on efficient ways to store power
for use on demand. In response to shifting energy demands and technological advancements,
the energy storage business has evolved, adapted, and innovated during the last century. The
majority of energy storage solutions work by turning electrical energy into another type of
energy, which must subsequently be converted back to electrical power before being used.

INTEGRATION OF BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS

(BESS) WITH SCADA

Battery Energy Storage Systems stores energy during periods of high production/low demand
and then discharges it during periods of low production/high demand. BESS must be
monitored and regulated much like any other energy source in a Battery Storage System
system.

The Electricity Management System (EMS) keeps track of grid demand and how much
energy the Storage System can provide. Based on the control logic required and the battery
system's state of charge, the EMS provides an input signal to charge or discharge the battery.

The battery's health, output, voltage, temperature, fire alert, and level of charge are all
monitored by the Battery Management System (BMS). Based on the input signal, it also
adjusts the charging and discharging power.

The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system interfaces with RTUs, HMI
and Communication systems. It is seen as the centre of the entire operation which operators
can monitor and give orders to the plant.

WHICH BATTERY DEVICES CONNECT DIRECTLY TO THE SCADA SYSTEM?

To monitor battery data, the SCADA system usually interfaces directly with the BMS. To
correctly regulate the BMS, the SCADA system may additionally be connected to the DC-DC
converters, inverters, and auxiliary meters.

WHAT INFORMATION IS DISPLAYED ON THE HMI FROM THE BATTERIES?

SOC, current, voltage, and temperature, as well as several associated stacks and alert
indications, are among the key readings transmitted through from the batteries/stacks. The
SCADA system may warn plant operators through an alarm on the HMI if there is a problem
with the batteries, such as overheating or inability to charge properly.

HOW CAN THE BATTERIES BE CONTROLLED BY THE SCADA SYSTEM?

Depending on the kind of system, the SCADA system can operate the batteries by interacting
directly with the BMS or with any combination of BMS, DC-DC converters, and inverters.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DIFFICULTIES OF INCLUDING BATTERIES IN A
SCADA SYSTEM?
The following are some of the difficulties that come with incorporating batteries:
Choosing the Best Control Scheme: The system may be designed to determine when the
batteries should be charged or discharged.
Power Controls, Both Real and Reactive Tuning: Once connected, batteries respond fast to
setpoints, but connection delays can cause output spikes, which control systems attempt to
avoid.
Determining Data and Control Communication Paths: Both SCADA and BMS rely on the
same devices for data and controls so it's critical to ensure that control pathways are clear and
that data may flow freely.

4.5 HOW DOES THE CONTROL STRATEGY BE AFFECTED BY BESS

SELECTION?
Internal logic-light BMS may need considerable logic from the site's PLC to guarantee that
ramp rates, safety parameters, operational parameters, and other factors are followed.
Another influence is the kind of BMS. There are two sorts of BMS: centralized and
decentralized, each with its own set of control techniques. There are differences in the
hardware and programming methodologies.
